When one voice challenges powerful interests, the consequences can reach far beyond a single story.
For weeks, Alex Serna’s family and supporters held on to hope that he would be found alive. The Mexican environmental activist and citizen journalist had suddenly disappeared after years of using his platform to raise concerns about environmental issues, land disputes, and alleged wrongdoing in his home region.
Serna, who was from Zihuatanejo in the Mexican state of Guerrero, built a following through his social media reporting. He regularly covered issues affecting the Costa Grande region, including possible environmental damage, controversial development projects, and disputes over natural resources.
On June 20, the day he went missing, Serna posted a video accusing a mango-processing company of possible environmental violations. He alleged that the company was operating without the proper environmental permits and using water resources without authorization. The claims have not been independently verified, and no official findings have confirmed his allegations.
Threats Before His Disappearance
Before he vanished, Serna had publicly stated that he was receiving threats connected to his reporting. He shared screenshots of messages that he said were sent in response to his work investigating environmental and community issues. The messages warned him to stop and allegedly suggested that the sender knew where he was located.
Investigators have not confirmed whether those threats were directly connected to his death, and the circumstances of the case remain under investigation. However, the warnings raised concerns among fellow journalists, activists, and human rights groups after Serna disappeared.
Nearly two weeks later, a body was discovered near the highway between Acapulco and Zihuatanejo. Authorities later confirmed that the remains belonged to Serna after his relatives identified him. Local reports stated that the body showed signs of severe violence, although officials have not publicly released all details about the cause of death.
A Death That Raises New Concerns For Journalists And Activists In Mexico
Serna’s death has sparked outrage in Guerrero and beyond. Human rights organizations, journalists, and environmental advocates are demanding a full investigation and calling on authorities to identify those responsible.
The case has also renewed attention on the dangers faced by journalists and activists in Mexico, particularly those who investigate powerful economic interests, environmental conflicts, or possible corruption. In many regions, reporting on land use, natural resources, and local power structures can put independent voices at risk. Serna used his platform to bring attention to issues he believed deserved public scrutiny. His death has now become part of a broader debate over how governments can better protect people who expose environmental concerns and challenge powerful interests.
For his family, supporters, and colleagues, the demand remains clear: answers must be found, and those responsible must be held accountable.
