Oman Court Sentences Influencers For Riding Endangered Sea Turtle For Clicks.
It is currently nesting season at Oman's Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, with sea turtles heading ashore to lay their eggs. While it should be common sense for tourists to keep their distance in a wildlife sanctuary, a Ukrainian influencer couple decided to shoot content on the back of an egg-laying turtle instead. An Omani court has now cracked down on the pair, handing them a one-month suspended prison sentence.
Abusing Wildlife for Clicks
Fitness influencer Vadym Oleynik traveled to Ras Al Hadd, Oman, alongside his fiancée Olena Kravchenko. The couple ended up at the turtle sanctuary late at night, where they harassed a sea turtle while it was laying eggs. Oleynik first threw his full weight onto the animal's back, triggering a frantic escape attempt. The 32-year-old then held onto the turtle's shell like he was riding a mechanical bull, flashing one of the hatchlings at the camera. To make matters worse, his fiancée Kravchenko then took her turn posing on the turtle's back, dragging the whole stunt out just to get more views.
Environmental Authority Intervenes
When the videos depicting this act of animal cruelty went viral, Oman’s Environmental Authority immediately took notice. For trespassing into a nesting zone, breaking wildlife conservation laws, and threatening public order with their post, the court slapped the couple with a one-month suspended prison sentence. Realistically, though, neither will actually go to jail because of the probation; they are currently free and can leave the country whenever they want. The only real penalties holding weight right now are a fine of 100 OMR each (around $520 total) and a likely spot on the country's blacklist.
Public backlash has been massive, heavily bruising Vadym Oleynik’s social media standing. He shed about 130,000 followers, took down the toxic video, and put out a public apology on Instagram. The influencer argued that he was misinformed and didn't know the rules. But the damage was done, and internet users widely dismissed his excuses as spurious.
