Doctors Were Left Baffled
The Birmingham man, formerly known as Matthew Whelan, spoke to “Need To Know” about the terrifying incident. His vision suddenly disappeared without warning. “I went temporarily blind for around 40 minutes,” he said. “It was so scary.” But the ordeal didn't end there. Even after his sight returned, Whelan was still unable to see properly. His vision remained blurry, and he also experienced severe vertigo that made everything around him seem to spin.
At the time, the 46-year-old was unable to even use his phone. Eventually, he had no choice but to stop police officers on a main road and ask them for help. Whelan was then taken for medical examinations. Doctors spent several hours carrying out various tests. According to Whelan, they ruled out a stroke and found that his eyes appeared healthy.
The situation was particularly unusual for the specialist treating him. According to Whelan, the doctor had never previously treated a patient with tattooed eyeballs.
Why He Suddenly Lost His Vision Remains Unclear
Doctors were apparently unable to determine exactly what caused Whelan's temporary blindness. That uncertainty likely made the experience even more frightening for him. After all, his eyes are anything but ordinary. The Brit had the whites of his eyes tattooed and has dramatically modified his body over the years.
Whelan was also diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes two years ago. However, he does not believe his tattoos are responsible for the condition. At the same time, he fears that his heavily modified eyes could make future treatment more difficult if his condition gets worse.
He Still Plans To Get More Tattoos
Whelan also suffers from benign positional vertigo, which can cause severe dizzy spells, particularly with certain movements. Following his temporary loss of vision, he apparently plans to take his health a little more seriously. He is spending less time on his phone and wears special blue-light-filtering glasses.
However, the incident has not ended his passion for extreme body modifications. While Whelan is relieved that his vision returned, he does not appear to be letting the experience stop him from getting more tattoos. He still plans to continue tattooing the rest of his body.
