Casey Simpson is speaking out about the pressures and exploitation he experienced as a child actor.
Casey Simpson became a familiar face to Nickelodeon viewers as one of the stars of Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn. Now, years after leaving the network, he is opening up about what growing up in Hollywood was really like. In an emotional video, Simpson discusses everything from exhausting work schedules and financial problems to the pressure placed on children to become successful performers.
Casey Simpson Reveals What Child Stardom Was Really Like
According to Simpson, the systems designed to protect young actors do not always work as intended. He claims that productions he worked on regularly exceeded the legally permitted working hours for minors. He also criticizes the rules surrounding Coogan Accounts, which are designed to protect a portion of a child actor's earnings until they turn 18.
Simpson argues that the financial protections are not nearly strong enough and says parents should never depend on their child's acting career to support the family. He recalls seeing young actors placed under enormous pressure because their families had moved to Los Angeles and depended on them getting jobs.
The former Nickelodeon star also describes how child actors can struggle with their identity after leaving the industry. When someone grows up being constantly praised for being a star, Simpson says, it can become difficult to separate personal worth from professional success.
The Pressure Can Follow Child Stars Into Adulthood
Simpson believes the effects of childhood fame can continue long after the cameras stop rolling. He discusses former child actors who struggled with substance abuse, eating disorders, homelessness and other serious problems.
He also shares personal memories of missing school activities and even changing his birthday plans because of acting jobs. At one point, he says, his entire family income depended on his career after his parents divorced.
Despite his criticism, Simpson does not believe child acting should necessarily be banned. Instead, he argues that it can be done ethically if children are properly protected and their families do not financially depend on their success.
The video also pays tribute to several former child stars who died young, like Hayden Panettiere and also including his friend and Just Add Magic co-star Tyler Sanders. Simpson says making the video was emotionally difficult but believes the industry needs to have a more honest conversation about what happens to children who grow up in the spotlight.
