Magic: The Gathering has been one of the most popular (and officially the world's first) trading card games for decades. More than three decades, to be exact - it was first released in 1993. Now, Hasbro has announced that it's getting a whole cinematic universe. We've gathered everything that's known so far:

A Bumpy Road To A Netflix Show

Anyone who would like to see a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe has certainly been waiting for a long time. After all, Netflix announced a series based on the games all the way back in 2019...and then cancelled it in 2021 when the project-leading Russo brothers, directors of multiple MCU movies, left the series.Years later, in September 2024, Netflix announced that it's planning an animated Magic: The Gathering show after all, led by Terry Matalas and in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast:

A Studio With A History Of Video Game Adaptations

But now it looks like there's even more content coming for the game's fans as Hasbro has announced that it's also partnering up with Legendary Pictures for a movie about the franchise. Legendary Pictures, by now, has some experience with video game movie adaptations as it's also behind:

  • Warcraft (2016)
  • Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
  • A Minecraft Movie (2025, upcoming)
  • Street Fighter (2026, upcoming)

But, of course, the studio is even more well-known for its blockbusters like its Christopher Nolan movies, The Hangover trilogy, etc. Currently, a lot of details on the project are still pending, including its director and release date.

An Excited Team

It's also not known whether the upcoming movie and Netflix show will be conntected to each other lore-wise or if they'll tell completely seperate stories. What is known, though, is that the involved parties are excited to work on the project:

Magic: The Gathering has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary's diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new Magic: The Gathering universe. - Zev Foreman, Hasbro Entertainment’s Head of Film
We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering. Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones. - Mary Parent, Legendary Pictures' Chairman of Worldwide Production

Even though we don't have a lot of information on this upcoming cinematic universe, Magic: The Gathering fans can finally look forward to some confirmed projects after waiting for so long.
