With rumors swirling around the next big MCU finale, Avengers: Doomsday, the question naturally arises as to whether Scarlet Witch will return – and, above all, which side she will be on.

The MCU – the Marvel Cinematic Universe – has evolved from a simple sequence of films that told a coherent story based on different comic book plots to a highly complex structure of various installments, games, series, spin-offs, and many more films that hardly anyone can really understand – not even the actors themselves.

The Confusing Twists And Turns Of The Marvel universe

But how are viewers supposed to understand who The One Who Remains is, or whether Shang-Chi's Rings of Power are connected to Ms. Marvel's cosmic Bangle, when even those who are directly involved and have their scripts and background meetings as references can no longer really figure it out?

For Elizabeth Olsen, it had been clear in recent years, after her first appearance as Wanda Maximoff in The Return of the First Avenger, that Scarlet Witch would be one of the good guys. And why not? After some initial hesitation, Quicksilver's twin sister joined the Avengers, fought with them against Thanos, and fell in love with Vision, the android based on Tony Stark's AI Jarvis.

Scarlet Witch Turned Foe

Even though she seemed to drift off emotionally a little in the Disney+ series Wandavision because she was struggling to cope with the loss of Vision, both viewers and Olsen herself believed they had witnessed a happy ending there – this was still the case even when Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness was announced.

But then everything changed, as the actress reported:

Three weeks before I was sent to London, they said, "You're our lead villain!" And I had no clue.

In fact, in the second Doctor Strange film, it turns out that Scarlet Witch is still influenced by the Necronomicon and, in search of her imaginary children, is prepared to leave a trail of destruction throughout the multiverse.

Does Elizabeth Olsen Return For Doomsday?

At first glance, it does indeed appear at the end of the film that Benedict Cumberbatch and Xochitl Gomez, as Doctor Strange and America Chavez, have triumphed over Scarlet Witch – but even in the MCU, with all its clones, variants, and reincarnations, no one is ever really as dead as it seems.

So will Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff return for Avengers: Doomsday? No one can say for sure yet. And if the Scarlet Witch does return, will she fight alongside our heroes or join forces with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom? No one knows yet – not even Elizabeth Olsen.
