Almost ten years after his final appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp could return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now confirmed that talks with the actor are underway.
Speaking to Deadline at D23, Bruckheimer said, “We’re talking to Johnny, working on a script, and hopefully we’ll get it done.” However, a comeback has not yet been officially confirmed. Here’s everything you need to know!
Johnny Depp Could Reportedly Have A Supporting Role
According to Deadline, Depp would not reprise the lead role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Instead, Margot Robbie is reportedly still set to be at the center of the film. The actress had already been attached to a new pirate adventure, although development on the project stalled for a while.
Depp could therefore return as Jack Sparrow in a supporting role. How significant his appearance would be remains unknown. Bruckheimer’s desire to bring Depp back is hardly surprising. The producer has repeatedly expressed his wish to see the actor return as Jack Sparrow in recent years.
In 2025, he explained that it would ultimately depend on whether Johnny was happy with the new story and the role. Bruckheimer had previously described Depp as a great artist and a good friend, while emphasizing just how much he shaped the character of Jack Sparrow. I probably don’t need to explain how thrilled fans of the franchise would be to see Johnny return.
When Will Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Be Released?
The last installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, hit theaters in 2017. Since then, there has been constant speculation about the future of the franchise. At one point, a film centered around Jack Sparrow’s son was even rumored.
