Johnny Knoxville and his band of chaos-loving misfits will return to theaters later this year.
After four films spanning more than 20 years, the successful Jackass franchise is making a comeback. In doing so, it continues a film series that was long considered finished.
Jackass Isn’t Over Yet
The older Jackass films are now considered absolute classics. However, they are not defined by a well-written story, but by gross and often reckless challenges that repeatedly push the group to their limits.
Whether it’s stepping into the ring with an enraged bull or being shot at from close range with rubber bullets, there are very few stupid ideas Jackass hasn’t already turned into reality. Pain, disgust, and complete loss of control are central to the concept and never merely incidental, but the core of the entertainment.
That tradition is now set to continue. Johnny Knoxville announced the fifth installment of the series on Instagram on January 8. June 26 is set as the planned release date. What stunts the new film will feature and who will appear on screen alongside Knoxville has not yet been revealed.
A Series Long Thought To Be Finished
With the new installment, a film series is being revived that was widely considered finished at the latest since Jackass Forever. A twelve-year gap separated the third and fourth films, during which it remained unclear whether the franchise would ever continue. One of the main reasons was likely the tragic death of Ryan Dunn in 2011. Dunn was not only a core member of the films but also closely connected to the group, a loss that had a lasting impact on the project.
With the current announcement, the question of the cast has moved to the forefront. Bam Margera was already not part of Jackass Forever, and his relationship with the crew has been described as difficult for years, making a return for the fifth installment seem unlikely. It also remains unclear whether familiar faces such as Steve-O or Wee Man will return. It is equally possible that the newer members introduced in Jackass Forever could take on a larger role.
So far, the only certainty is that Jackass will continue. What exactly the new film will look like remains unclear. What does seem certain, however, is that the fifth installment will once again rely on what has always defined the series: risky stunts, questionable ideas, and a sense of humor that needs little explanation.
