It´s official: The Monsters are getting their own Movie. Who's excited?

Labu Labu

Labubus were first invented by artist Kasing Lung in 2025 with a series of picture books known as The Monsters Trilogy. They were relatively unknown back then and only an niche interest of some, one of those people being Blackpink's Lisa. After she wore her Labubu keychain on her bag, her fans started copying her and after that, the little monsters took off on their own. Predominantly in 2025, Labubus were everywhere – and i mean everywhere – and it got crazier by the second. From the 24-carat gold Labubu to the Dubai-Chocolate-Labubu-Matcha, the phenomenon spread around the world. A lot of people love the little monsters and find them cute, others just can't get over how ugly they find them.

The Movie

When something goes this viral, Hollywood wants a piece of it. So it was only a matter of time. On March 18, it was announced during an exhibition tour for The Monsters’ 10th anniversary in Paris: After buying the rights, Sony Pictures is producing a Labubu Movie in cooperation with Pop Mart.

The movie is in early development and not much is released about it yet. It will be directed by Paul King, who is known for movies like the 2014 Paddington and 2023 Wonka. King will develop the script with Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen, tick, tick... BOOM!). Also, the Labubu creator Kasing Lung will be an executive producer alongsinde them.

People are comparing it to the Minecraft movie and the Emoji movie. Although the concept seems strange to some, and moreover, it seems a little late now that the Labubu hype kind of died, many are actually excited. Not by the theme of the movie though, but by its director. People put all their hopes in Paul King and Steven Levenson to make a watchable and maybe even enjoyable movie. One user wrote:

I know there’s a lot of stigma with Labubu, deservedly so in some cases. But until I see the film for myself, I can’t see how a movie written by someone with that track record, and Paul King, the director of Paddington and Wonka, will be bad.

Another says:

Directed by Paul King? I can’t believe I’m saying it but I’m hyped for the Labubu movie!

So maybe, against all odds and expectations for a Labubu movie, Paul King will make the impossible possible and actually produce a good film – we will have to wait and see.
