The memes really made Ma 2 happen.
In a move nobody saw coming, Blumhouse has confirmed that Ma is getting a sequel, and Octavia Spencer is returning to play Sue Ann once again. The announcement dropped on June 4 with a cheeky post on Instagram and X:
MA fans, lovers, and apologists, this one's for you.@octaviaspencer returns in MA 2.

Fans of the 2019 movie were instantly thrilled, especially considering how the original ended.
But Did Sue Ann Really Die?
At the end of Ma, Sue Ann appeared to go up in flames along with her house, but her fate was left just vague enough to leave the door open. Now, six years later, it turns out she is not done yet. Director Tate Taylor has previously hinted at sequel ideas, including Sue Ann moving to a new town and starting over. One concept he teased involves her working in real estate and using open houses as hunting grounds.
Why Ma Became A Meme Legend
Ma did well in theaters, but it blew up online. People expected a serious horror film, especially with someone like Octavia Spencer in the lead, but the campy, silly tone caught everyone off guard. Memes took over, especially the now iconic line “Don’t make me drink alone."

Octavia Spencer leaned in and even held a "best Ma meme contest". People loved that she seemed to have a lot of fun playing and embracing such a messy character and didn't take herself too seriously. The film became a cult favorite, resurfacing on TikTok and Twitter from time to time. In 2024, it went viral again after Kamala Harris posted a TikTok with Octavia Spencer, saying “Don’t make me vote alone” as part of her endorsement. Thanks to all the online love and attention, Ma 2 is now actually happening.

What We Know So Far About Ma 2
Plot details are still under wraps, and there is no confirmed release date yet, but people are already excited. The idea of Octavia Spencer once again playing a woman who pretends to be sweet while hiding dark motives has fans ready to buy their tickets already. The sequel will be another Blumhouse production, continuing the studio's streak of turning weird, unsettling ideas into box office gold. The character of Sue Ann is fascinating, unpredictable, and layered. Bringing her back gives the creators room to explore her trauma, her rage, and the twisted way she tries to connect with people. Ma 2 could be even darker and weirder with more memes.
