One year after TikTok influencer Valeria Márquez was murdered during a livestream, authorities have announced major developments in the investigation that shocked social media in 2025.
The 23-year-old content creator was fatally shot while livestreaming from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Mexico, in May 2025. The attack was captured live on TikTok and quickly went viral, leaving millions stunned and raising questions about who was behind the killing.
Now, investigators say they have made significant progress in identifying those allegedly responsible.
Authorities Link Cartel Leader to the Murder
Last week, Mexican authorities arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” an alleged leader of a criminal cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Officials believe he played a key role in ordering the murder of Márquez.
According to Mexico's Secretary of Security, investigators believe El R-1's son, who reportedly had a relationship with Márquez, asked his father to arrange the killing after previously threatening the influencer. Authorities say this theory is now backed by evidence gathered during the investigation.
The arrest of El R-1 came as part of a wider operation targeting organized crime. He is also accused of involvement in several other high-profile crimes, including the murder of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo.
Another Arrest Marks Major Progress
Authorities have also arrested Iván Martín N., who prosecutors say participated in the planning, execution, and aftermath of Márquez's murder. During the operation, investigators reportedly seized firearms, mobile phones, and other evidence they believe is connected to the case.
For months after the killing, the investigation saw little public progress, fueling speculation across social media about who was responsible. These latest arrests represent the biggest breakthrough since Márquez's murder and could finally provide answers in one of the most widely discussed influencer cases of last year.
While investigators continue searching for additional suspects, authorities say the case remains active and further arrests are possible as the investigation moves forward.
