In August 2024, Taylor Swift canceled her three "Eras Tour" concerts in Vienna. The reason was a planned terrorist attack by the extremist group Islamic State. The perpetrator has now confessed to his plans in court.

The "Eras Tour" in Vienna

In 2024, singer Taylor Swift performed numerous concerts worldwide as part of her “Eras Tour.” In August, a total of 195,000 fans known as “Swifties” gathered in the Austrian capital, only to be disappointed: one day before the first concert, all three shows in Vienna were canceled. A planned terrorist attack led to the cancellation of the three events at Ernst Happel Stadium.

The Planned Attack

On 7 August, a day before the first concert, Beran A. was arrested. The Austrian police had received information from the CIA about a potential terrorist attack. The now 21-years-old had planned to drive into the crowd in front of the stadium with a car and explosives. The police found chemicals for making bombs, as well as knives and machetes, at his house. Beran A has pledged loyalty to the terrorist organization IS.

The Confession of the Culprit

During the court proceedings, the suspect admitted to being a member of IS. He stated that he had been radicalized by hate preachers on the social media platform TikTok. He received help in joining IS from a teenager in Frankfurt (Oder), who translated the bomb-making plans and the pledge of allegiance for him.

Furthermore, Beran A. confessed to planning the assassination. The defendant could face up to ten years in prison for the planned attack and for being a member of a terrorist organization. His defense claims that he is "just an immature teenager who wanted to brag."

More Attacks in Dubai, Istanbul and Mecca

The attack on the Taylor Swift concert is not the only charge against Beran A. Together with two other men, he allegedly planned a series of additional attacks. The group intended to kill numerous people in Dubai, Istanbul, and Mecca. The accomplice, Hasan E., carried out the plans and injured several people in a knife attack in Mecca. He is currently in custody in Saudi Arabia and faces a possible death sentence. Beran A. could receive a prison sentence of up to 20 years in Austria for his “role as an accomplice.”

“We Were Grieving Concerts, Not Lives”

Around one month after the attack Taylor Swift wrote on Instagram:

“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”

The Eras Tour consisted of 149 events in total. The Vienna concerts were the only ones that had to be canceled.
