Hans Zimmer is one of the most iconic film composers of all time, shaping the sound of Hollywood for decades. Already in the 80s, he added magic to films like Rain Man, setting the stage for his legendary career. With 12 Oscar nominations and two wins, his impact on cinema is undeniable. From Pirates of the Caribbean to Inception, his scores have defined entire franchises. Yet, despite Marvel’s massive success, Zimmer has never composed for the MCU. Was it a lack of interest, bad timing, or something more?

Here’s everything you need to know about the collab we’re probably never going to get.

Why Hans Zimmer Avoided the MCU

Hans Zimmer has composed for some of the most influential superhero films, including Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel. His music has shaped the atmosphere of these blockbusters, making them even more impactful.

Zimmer has actually worked on a Marvel superhero movie, but not in the MCU. He composed the score for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, though not even one of the greatest composers could save the movie from its messy execution – especially not with that 2010s Skrillex-esque villain theme. Yikes.

Timing Issues and Missed Opportunities

Zimmer revealed in an interview that Marvel reached out to him multiple times, but the timing was never right. He was committed to other projects and couldn’t fit an MCU film into his schedule. Additionally, the specific offers he received didn’t excite him enough to reconsider his plans. While he respects Marvel’s success, he never felt the urge to dive into their universe. As a result, fans will likely never hear a Hans Zimmer score in an MCU blockbuster.

But why exactly would Hans Zimmer be a huge improvement for the MCU? Many Marvel movies use temp music during production. A director places existing music over an early edit and then often wants exactly that or something very similar, leaving the composer with little creative freedom. Now, compare that to Nolan, who let Zimmer compose Interstellar’s theme before the movie was even shot – or when he only gave him his watch to create the ticking score for Dunkirk.

The music in the MCU is often quiet and merely serves as background support for the emotions we see on screen. This contrasts with Zimmer’s unforgettable, dominant scores – like the iconic BRRAAMM from Inception. I mean, try it yourself – hum the theme of Thor. No? There are literally four films. Ant-Man’s score? Nothing? Okay, then just sing Zimmer’s version of Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien.
