Meet Skyrim's weirdest companion: IKEA's official Kallax mod adds a talking shelf, new quests, and an Allen Key weapon.
Mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are hardly a new phenomenon. Ever since the game's release in 2011, modders have been hard at work publishing both incredibly useful and wonderfully bizarre content. What was previously unheard of, however, is a mod that marries usefulness and absurdity quite like this - especially since it stems from IKEA! Fittingly, the mod, called Kallax Storageborn, introduces a shelf as your newest companion. Although a piece of furniture is rarely the most talkative entourage, IKEA went all out and hired British comedian Matt Berry to voice it.
Is IKEA becoming a part of gaming culture?
Given recent developments, the Swedish furniture juggernaut’s foray into the digital realm is not entirely surprising. IKEA recently teamed up with Microsoft to launch a limited-run Xbox furniture collection, featuring sleek pieces designed to accommodate gamers while seamlessly blending into any living room when the console is turned off.
Nevertheless, IKEA bringing digital furniture directly into Skyrim was not on anyone's bingo card. Available via the Creation system, anyone can download the mod for Xbox and PC completely free of charge. Beyond being a clever, tongue-in-cheek nod to non-human talking companions, Kallax actually serves a practical purpose: the chatty shelf lets you hoard various items without overencumbering your inventory - a lifesaver in a world as full of loot as Skyrim. Still, the real kicker is that the Dragonborn must shout "IKEA!" to summon the shelf.
While the addition of a storage companion is neat, some players might crave more substantial gameplay. Interestingly, IKEA anticipated this and packed the mod with extra incentives: two brand-new dungeons, a challenging boss fight against the Clutter Golem, and unique equipment like an Allen Key weapon and a Meatball Helmet.
All in all, these creative additions prove that the Swedish company is willing to go the extra mile to entertain gamers, showing that they genuinely do not take themselves too seriously.
