Middle-earth comes to life again – a legendary adventure returns to the big screen.
Middle-earth fans can breathe a sigh of relief: The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027. The film explores a previously little-seen episode between the events of the classic trilogy. At the center of the story is the hunt for Gollum, who once possessed the One Ring. This period was only briefly touched on in the previous films, but it is now shown in detail for the first time. The action takes place after Bilbo’s 111th birthday, yet before Frodo leaves the Shire a span of nearly 17 years that the filmmakers now bring to life in an exciting new adventure.
New Aragorn, Familiar Heroes: Mortensen Won’t Return
There is, however, a major surprise for fans of the original films: Viggo Mortensen will not be returning as Aragorn. The now 67-year-old actor would have needed either digital de-aging or heavy makeup for the role. The producers, however, decided to cast a new actor in the part. Many fans are disappointed, as Mortensen’s portrayal of the ranger and later king of Gondor is iconic. Despite this change, expectations for the film remain high, as the story stays closely connected to the familiar world of Middle-earth and several beloved characters return.
Peter Jackson, the director of the original trilogy, returns as a producer, supported by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The screenplay was developed together with writers Arty Papageorgiou and Phoebe Gittins, who have previously worked on other Middle-earth projects. Andy Serkis reprises his role as Gollum and also directs the film, allowing one of the saga’s most fascinating characters to shape the story behind the camera as well. Additionally, Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo in smaller roles, strengthening the connection to the original trilogy and further increasing fans’ anticipation.
