If you were a queer teenage girl in 2015, chances are you remember this song. Hayley Kiyoko’s 2015 music video Girls Like Girls made a lasting impression. With its vulnerable storytelling and LGBTQ representation, it resonated deeply with young audiences around the world. Nearly ten years later, Kiyoko is bringing that story to the big screen, this time as a feature film.

Hayley Kiyoko Steps Behind The Camera

Kiyoko will be directing the film herself, making her official debut as a filmmaker. She also co–wrote the script alongside Stefanie Scott, who starred as Coley in the original music video. This new version will expand on the short story fans know, adding context through a full–length narrative.

The Book Came First

Before the film, Kiyoko adapted the Girls Like Girls story into a young adult novel, published in 2023. The book follows a teenage girl navigating first love, identity, and friendship during one transformative summer. The film is expected to follow a similar storyline.

A Meaningful Story For A New Generation

Girls Like Girls meant a lot to queer teens growing up in the 2010s. It was one of the first times many saw a love story that actually reflected their own. Turning it into a film is a way of giving that story more time, more space, and the chance to reach people who might be seeing themselves in it for the very first time.
