British influencer Brooke George was arrested in Dubai after stabbing her partner. She is claiming self-defense.
Brooke George, a 23-year-old British influencer, is accused of murdering her partner. Prosecutors allege it was a premeditated crime, but the TikToker herself is pleading self-defense. If convicted, she faces the death penalty by firing squad.
Dispute Ends In Death
Brooke George is just one of many aspiring influencers living the dream of a career in the metropolis of Dubai. But for her, that goal quickly turned into a nightmare.
George met 26-year-old Bill Treeby on Facebook. According to her family, the man made many promises of glamour and luxurious photo shoots in Dubai, luring her to the Emirates. Her first trip there went smoothly, but when she visited him a second time, the man revealed his true colors.
The human rights organization “Detained in Dubai” reports that he stole her passport and tried to control her by, among other things, booking only a one-way ticket and not a return ticket. Allegedly he also physically assaulted her.
Furthermore, the influencer’s mother reports that she had been acting very unusually in the days leading up to the dispute. Shortly before that, she had seemed much calmer than usual.
During a confrontation in which George begged for her passport, he struck her. The 23-year-old reportedly feared for her life and therefore grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him. Treeby died in his apartment in Dubai.
After the incident, George attempted to leave the country but was arrested at the airport.
Serious Allegations Against the Dubai Authorities
The accused’s family has also come up with serious allegations against the Dubai authorities. They claim George was forced to undress in front of male police officers and was initially denied legal counsel. Furthermore, misunderstandings arose due to the language barrier.
The legal system of the United Arab Emirates is a mixture of Sharia law and civil law. Although Dubai is a popular travel destination and home to many influencers, it is actually not all that safe for them. Acts that would be considered self-defense in our country are punishable in the Emirates by a long prison sentence or even death.
Detained in Dubai is advocating on Brooke George’s behalf and supporting her through her legal proceedings. It is believed that Treeby has already attempted to lure several other women into the country in a similar manner. The organization has informed the British government about the case, requesting that it should help to provide a fair trial.
Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, is advocating for George’s release on bail. Furthermore, George’s allegations of domestic violence against Treeby should be investigated, as the case could then be treated as self-defense rather than premeditated murder.
