Pokémon TCG conventions ar all about rare cards, but some sellers are bringing something very different.
At Collect-A-Con, visitors reportedly encountered an unusual sight: puppies being offered for thousands of dollars, with some allegedly offered in exchange for Pokémon cards.
Puppies Become Part of the Pokémon TCG Market
Videos circulating online show breeders walking around Collect-A-Con with puppies and attempting to sell them to attendees. In one case, a fluffy French Bulldog was reportedly offered for around $10,000. Another clip shows a puppy being offered in exchange for Pokémon cards, with its value said to be around $4,000.
The unusual practice caught the attention of Pokémon content creator Opossum Bud, who reacted to several of the clips. He questioned whether a trading card convention is an appropriate place to sell animals.
The biggest concern is not simply the unusual combination of puppies and Pokémon cards. Bringing young dogs into a crowded convention and using them to attract potential buyers raises questions about their welfare and whether buyers are actually prepared to care for them.
Some of the dogs shown also belong to breeds that can suffer from significant health problems, adding another layer to the controversy.
Why Are Puppies Being Offered at TCG Events?
The videos have sparked debate over whether Pokémon conventions should allow breeders to use puppies as part of their sales strategy.
Critics argue that the animals can effectively become marketing tools. Their appearance may attract people emotionally, potentially making it easier to turn an impulse reaction into a purchase.
There is also concern about what could happen if the practice becomes normalized. If puppies can be used as unconventional trading assets today, some fear that other pets could eventually appear at conventions as well.
Collect-A-Con is primarily a trading card event, making the presence of puppies for sale particularly unusual. Whether the practice violates any specific convention rules or animal-welfare regulations is not established by the available footage.
