Considering how beloved the second Puss in Boots movie is, it's curious to think that the first one was so overlooked by the public and has been largely forgotten in the world of cinema. In part, I believe this is due to the early signs of milking the franchise, turning into what they swore to destroy (Disney), but the reality is that it's boring and not very entertaining. Although Shrek Forever After might be the least funny of the four main films in the saga, I also think it brings us one of the most interesting plots in the series. It’s about an adult Shrek, now with children, who is suffering from a midlife crisis and just wants to relive the past days of glory. The reason so many people love Puss in Boots: The Last Wish lies in its underlying message, which no other Shrek character could have conveyed better than the dashing and daring, swashbuckling feline. After all, it's about laughing in the face of death, only to realize how terrifying and inevitable it is... and maybe that's exactly why we shouldn't fear it. Not only because of its behind-the-scenes mythology, where it beat Disney to win the first-ever animation Oscar in history and represented a great victory for DreamWorks, but also because as a concept, it's as straightforward as it is fun. It's a road movie, an adventure, an action film, a drama, and a comedy all in one, with characters who, despite their low-brow humor and hyperactivity, never become annoying or tiresome.
