Many major subreddits are banning links to Twitter (X) after Musk made a right-wing gesture.
More and more major subreddits have recently banned links to the Twitter (X) platform purchased by Elon Musk – some even banned screenshots. The reason for this is a gesture by Musk – he showed an alleged Hitler salute at US President Trump's swearing-in ceremony.
No more Twitter on Reddit
Of course, this was not without consequences. Tesla CEO Elon Musk was a frequent target of criticism even before the Twitter acquisition. Many major subreddits, including the German r/de subreddit and many sports and gaming subreddits, now ban links to Musk's platform.
Reactions to the Twitter ban are mixed. Some users find this step good and reasonable – either because of the often complicated handling of Twitter links, or as one user in the Baldur's Gate 3 Subreddit says: "This is great news, so happy to hear it. There are many debatable things in life, but the proper reaction to Elon's salute ain't one of them."
Others are of the opinion that the next step should be a ban on links to meta-platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
Others say the ban makes little sense as long as Twitter is often the only source of information. One r/nfl user says: "there goes 90% of posts on the sub lol. wonder how the actual NFL will feel about this. good on you for defeating fascism tho."
Some redditors see no point in the ban at all, like this r/ffxiv user: "This whole thing is ridiculous. I don't like Elon, but banning links from Twitter is an overreaction. I literally could not care less about what he did or didn't do. This is just pearl clutching and slacktivism so you can feel like you're making a difference when you're not. Banning Twitter links is not going to do anything meaningful. Get over yourselves."
Bluesky is mentioned as an alternative in some subreddits. This platform even originated from a decentralized network initiative of Twitter and is therefore very similar in structure to X. Only without Musk.
