The little monkey has now not only begun to connect with the other animals, but also has many more plush friends.

At Ichikawa Zoo in Japan lives the baby monkey Punch, who was rejected by his group shortly after birth and has since grown up without members of his own species.

The animal keepers quickly noticed that Punch found comfort in an unusual companion: a soft plush orangutan that he carried everywhere. The internet promptly nicknamed this cuddly companion, which also seems to serve as a mother substitute, "Oran-Mama." The stuffed toy became his only friend – tightly clutched while falling asleep and always by his side during playtime.

The story of the lonely young monkey quickly spread across social media throughout Japan and deeply moved many people. Petra Fare, CEO of IKEA Japan, also became aware of Punch. Touched by his fate, she decided to personally visit the little monkey.

IKEA Donates Stuffed Animals To Rejected Baby Monkey

During her visit, she observed Punch tightly holding his worn plush orangutan – interestingly, it comes from the Swedish furniture retailer’s Djungelskog collection. Together with the zoo team, Tanaka discussed how important emotional enrichment and a sense of security are for young animals that must grow up without social bonds. She spontaneously announced support.

Just a few days later, an IKEA team delivered a large donation to the zoo: numerous stuffed animals in different sizes, colors, and shapes. Among them were several "Oran-Mama" plush toys, intended as replacements should the original one eventually become too worn out or damaged.

There are now initial reports that Punch is gradually being accepted into the group of monkeys, though it remains undisputed that his stuffed animals will always hold a very special place in his heart.

The campaign was meant not only to help Punch but also to raise awareness about the emotional well-being of zoo animals. The story of a rejected baby monkey thus became a symbol of compassion – and a reminder that even simple gestures, such as a stuffed toy, can provide comfort and a sense of connection.
