A swatting attack changed Axeel Melendez’s life forever, leaving him with consequences he will have to live with for the rest of his life.
An online dispute in a video game ended in disaster for a 24-year-old gamer from Arizona. After hackers allegedly stole his personal information and threatened him with a swatting attack, the Rust player was seriously injured during a police response and has been paralyzed ever since. Now, he is seeking millions in damages from the responsible authorities.
No streamer, no celebrity, yet a Rust player became a target
When people hear about swatting, they often think of popular Twitch streamers or major influencers. However, the case of Axeel Melendez shows that even completely unknown gamers can become victims of this dangerous tactic.
The 24-year-old was not a public creator and did not have a large following. He was simply playing Rust when a conflict within the gaming community apparently took a dramatic turn.
According to the legal claim, everything started when another player accused Melendez of cheating. The person allegedly offered to inspect his computer to prove whether the accusation was true. Shortly afterward, Melendez noticed suspicious activity on his accounts.
Hackers allegedly gained access to his email address and private information. They then reportedly attempted to blackmail him. Among other threats, they allegedly claimed they would make a fake emergency call and send police to his home.
Gamer Warned Police About Possible Swatting Attack
Melendez took the threat seriously and contacted authorities to warn them about a possible attack. He wanted to prevent a fake emergency from turning into a dangerous police response.
According to his attorney, this warning was not properly taken into account. Shortly afterward, a fake emergency call was actually made. An unknown person allegedly pretended to be Melendez and claimed that a violent incident had taken place at his home.
Although the later legal claim states that there were several warning signs, including inconsistent details and a suspicious phone number, officers still responded to the address.
Police Entered Home, Gamer Was Seriously Injured
When officers arrived, they initially attempted to gain access to the building. According to Melendez’s family, they eventually broke the window of his bedroom.
The gamer allegedly believed that intruders were trying to enter his home. He then grabbed his mother’s legally registered firearm for protection.
When officers saw him holding the weapon, they opened fire. A total of eight shots were reportedly fired. Two bullets struck Melendez, causing severe injuries to his leg, ribs, and spinal cord. Since the incident, he has been paralyzed from the chest down.
Family Seeks $176 Million In Damages
Melendez and his mother have filed a $176 million claim against Pima County and the responsible Sheriff’s Department.
The accusation is that authorities failed to take the warning about a possible swatting attack seriously enough, allowing the situation to escalate. The family argues that Melendez did exactly what someone in this situation should do: He informed police in advance. Despite that, the dangerous response still happened. The department has not commented on the allegations and cited the ongoing legal proceedings.
Swatting Remains A Problem In The Gaming World
The case once again highlights how dangerous swatting can be. Attackers use fake emergency calls to send armed law enforcement officers to a specific address, often with the goal of intimidating or harming their target.
Swatting often affects larger Twitch streamers because some attackers deliberately seek public attention. They want to witness the victim’s reaction live, disrupt the stream, or even force the creator to end the broadcast. These attacks are often motivated by hatred, jealousy, or the desire to intentionally harm others.
However, while well-known streamers are frequently targeted, the Arizona case shows that ordinary players can also become victims. Whether it is a dispute within an online community, an attempt to obtain personal information through blackmail, or simply someone wanting to cause harm, sometimes a single conflict is enough to turn a normal gaming session into a life-threatening situation.
