Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is set to lead and produce a brand-new Alice in Wonderland–inspired musical film at Universal, with Lorene Scafaria writing and directing.
Sabrina Carpenter, one of pop’s brightest talents, is making a big leap into the world of cinema. Universal Pictures has tapped her to star in and produce an untitled musical film inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. What makes it especially exciting is that she’s not just acting, she’s also stepping behind the camera as a producer.
A Dream Project For Carpenter And Scafaria
The film will be written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, best known for Hustlers and her work on Succession. Scafaria brings experience in creating emotionally rich, character-driven stories, and she seems like a natural fit to shape a musical version of Wonderland. Interestingly, the project seems to have began as a personal passion for Carpenter. Reports suggest that she first pitched the concept to Universal in 2024. Now, she’s not just starring, she’s producing alongside Marc Platt (of Wicked fame) through his Marc Platt Productions, plus Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton.
Good Timing For A Big Transition
This move comes at a turning point in Carpenter’s career. She recently earned six Grammy nominations for her seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend. After focusing heavily on music in recent years (she’s appeared in Netflix films like Tall Girl and The Hate U Give, but her main spotlight has been the stage), this feels like a powerful next chapter. While plot details remain under wraps, the talent attached signals that Universal is aiming for a high‑quality, possibly quite modern and emotional take on Carroll’s classic. With Carpenter’s musical ability and Scafaria’s feeling for character nuance, this could be a Wonderland that feels fresh and deeply personal.
This new Alice in Wonderland musical is shaping up to be one of the most exciting upcoming film projects. A bold career move for Sabrina Carpenter and a creative spin from Lorene Scafaria. What do you think?
