The news hit like a lightning bolt: Scarlett Johansson, who spent over a decade portraying Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is reportedly close to signing on for The Batman – Part II.

While her role remains officially under wraps, many signs point to her potentially taking on one of the most exciting characters from Batman’s animated universe – Andrea Beaumont, better known as the Phantasm.

Speculation Around Phantasm Role Heats Up

Speculation has been swirling for weeks that Matt Reeves plans to introduce a villain in the sequel who’s never appeared in a live-action adaptation before. One character, in particular, stands out: Andrea Beaumont, who first appeared in the acclaimed 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. In that film, she is portrayed as Bruce Wayne’s tragic childhood love, whose personal journey eventually turns her into a deadly vigilante – a dark mirror to the Dark Knight. While Batman never breaks his moral code or kills, Beaumont crosses that line.

Fan art depicting Scarlett Johansson in the iconic Phantasm mask has already started circulating – and it’s easy to imagine her in the role. Johansson has proven she can bring complex, emotionally driven characters to life. At the same time, this would be a complete fresh start outside the MCU, free from the baggage of a long-running franchise.

Between Love And Danger

Insiders have also shared interesting details about the character’s tone: Johansson is said to be introduced either as a new ally and potential love interest for Bruce Wayne, or as an antagonist whose true motives are gradually revealed. This duality is a hallmark of Andrea Beaumont.

Even the first The Batman film showcased Reeves’ preference for a grounded, dark noir style. A character like the Phantasm would fit perfectly: emotionally complex, morally ambiguous, and closely tied to Bruce’s past. At the same time, she could give the sequel a more personal dimension, going beyond the typical hero-versus-villain dynamic.

While Zoe Kravitz’s return as Catwoman is still more rumor than confirmed, Johansson could step into the vacant role of a central female lead. Filming is set to begin in spring 2026, with a release date of October 1, 2027 – an ambitious schedule, especially since Johansson is first set to work on a new exorcism film by Mike Flanagan.

Whether she will actually take on the role of the Phantasm remains to be officially confirmed.

Still, the combination of casting rumors, hints from Reeves, and a character that fits perfectly with the tone of the Batman universe has already got many fans extremely excited about the project.
