Mario fans have reason to celebrate: the legendary plumber is returning in 2026 with a brand-new cinematic adventure. Nintendo and Universal Pictures have officially announced the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The reveal took place during a special Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025, in celebration of Mario’s 40th anniversary.

The announcement was accompanied by the first teaser, offering a brief but atmospheric glimpse into the Mushroom Kingdom.

Off To Space With Mario

Contrary to earlier speculation about a “Super Mario World” film, the sequel shows that Mario is now exploring not just a single world, but an entire galaxy. The teaser remains vague, but sets the mood: Mario sleeps peacefully under a tree while a butterfly flutters across the landscape.

Familiar characters like Monty Mole and Cheep Cheeps make appearances before the scene shifts to Princess Peach’s castle. The camera then pans to the starry sky, revealing the film’s title. Beyond this, Nintendo is keeping plot details under wraps.

Familiar Heroes, New Adventures

The film’s cast remains familiar to fans: Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy reprises Princess Peach, Jack Black is back as Bowser, Charlie Day returns as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson voices Kamek again.

Illumination founder Chris Meledandri emphasized that the goal is to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers. The sequel is designed to blend nostalgic elements with fresh ideas, presenting Mario in an exciting new setting.

Galaxy Movie Stays True To The Classic

Behind the scenes, the team is also sticking with what worked: Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors, with Matthew Fogel back on the screenplay. Following the massive success of the first film in 2023 which grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, this continuity makes perfect sense.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.

The new film draws inspiration from the 2007 Nintendo Wii classic Super Mario Galaxy, one of the most beloved 3D adventures in the franchise. Players guided Mario across multiple planets, each with its own gravity, creating a unique cosmic gameplay experience.

The game’s imaginative levels, orchestral soundtrack, and epic atmosphere made it unforgettable and now serve as the foundation for the upcoming cinematic adventure.

Mario Takes Off – And The Universe Expands

With Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo continues to expand its film universe. In addition to the animated sequel, a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is already in development in collaboration with Sony Pictures, directed by “Maze Runner” film maker Wes Ball. Additional animated films are also possible, signaling Nintendo’s long-term presence in theaters.

With Mario returning to the stars and the familiar star-studded cast back in action, Super Mario Galaxy promises to delight longtime fans while introducing new audiences to the adventures of the iconic plumber.
