After Snow White underperformed at the box office, Disney decided to put its live-action remake of Tangled on hold.

Tangled Was In The Works – Until Now

The remake of Tangled was still in early development, with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey attached and screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson on board. For many fans, it sounded like a dream project – Rapunzel’s story, a magical atmosphere, and hopefully, a strong cast. But now? It’s officially been put on ice. Disney hasn’t made a public announcement, but industry insiders say the project is no longer moving forward – at least for now.

Snow White Didn’t Hit – But Don’t Blame Rachel Zegler

After Snow White tanked at the box office, Disney quietly shelved its planned live-action Tangled remake. Despite all the buzz, Snow White was surrounded by controversy from the very start, and still ended up flopping. People took issue with almost everything: the casting choices, the overall style, and the script. Nothing seemed to click, and the film just didn’t deliver the way Disney had hoped.

The media and a lot of people online were especially quick to turn on Rachel Zegler. She took most of the heat, even though much of the backlash had little to do with her personally. Every move she made was overanalyzed, her interviews were picked apart, and she was even blamed for things completely out of her control – like costume choices or the overall styling of Snow White. From the beginning, her casting sparked controversy, with some arguing that Snow White should be portrayed by someone with pale skin – ignoring the fact that Rachel Zegler is a talented actress but also happens to be a Colombian woman. On top of that, she faced constant hate simply for being a young, outspoken woman in the spotlight. Whether it was voicing her political beliefs, like her support for Palestine, or just existing too confidently for some people’s taste – the internet didn’t hold back. Now, as Tangled quietly disappears from Disney’s plans, people are once again starting to point fingers at Rachel Zegler.

Interestingly, most of the conversation focused on the film’s visuals, while the acting barely got any serious attention. Critics pointed out that Gal Gadot completely missed the mark, failing to bring any depth or presence to her role. Meanwhile, Rachel Zegler actually earned praise – especially for her vocals, which were seen as one of the few real highlights of the film.

So, Who's To Blame?

Disney probably should have focused on writing a stronger script – and maybe take a break from pumping out live-action remakes altogether. While a lot of fans were disappointed to hear that the Tangled remake was shelved, others were honestly relieved. Many feel like the constant stream of remakes is getting repetitive, unoriginal, and totally unnecessary – especially when the original Tangled was already such a big hit. The animated version didn’t just do well when it dropped, it became an instant classic and one of Disney’s most beloved modern films. For a lot of people, it simply doesn’t need a reboot because it's already perfect.

What's Next For Disney, And Is There Still Hope For The Live-Action Tangled?

While many fans are disappointed, especially after hyping the project and sharing their dream fan casts (many with Sabrina Carpenter as Rapunzel, Taylor Zakhar Perez as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel) – there’s still some live-action content to look forward to, like Moana in 2026 and Lilo & Stitch in May 2025. Tangled might be stuck in limbo for now, and it’s unclear whether Disney will ever bring it back into active development. So for the moment, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next.

But what do you think? Were you excited to see a live-action Tangled? Or are you over the remake era and hoping Disney starts creating original stories again? Let us know in the comments.
