Dressed in a sharp shirt and tie, Head of State Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh recently shocked social media by casually bench-pressing 220 lbs (100 kg) for 20 reps. Given his track record of unusual personal pursuits, the internet is once again celebrating his effortless, action-movie charisma.
Not Your Typical President
Footage of Khürelsükh dominating the bench press during a military unit inspection might seem unusual for a politician, but it aligns with his larger-than-life persona. The former army officer with a background in bodybuilding has a long history of rugged passion projects. Upon turning 50, he founded a heavy rock band called Pals, where he plays guitar. To further cement his credentials, he established the Mongolian Harley-Davidson Fan Club, a community of local riders that honors a historical connection between Mongolia and the American motorcycle manufacturer.
Despite his eclectic background, the viral weightlifting video truly captivated global audiences. Popular internet commentators, such as Canadian content creator Dougie Sharpe, highlighted how the president stands out among typically rigid global politicians. While Khürelsükh was officially scheduled only to inspect a military gym, the sight of a loaded barbell prompted him to spontaneously shed his suit jacket and knock out 20 reps. Sharpe also noted that the president's first name, Khürelsükh, translates literally to "Bronze Axe," giving Mongolia a commander-in-chief whose reputation matches his name.
