The first trailer for the new Superman movie is here, and it's already sparking discussions.
The first full trailer for James Gunn's Superman was released on May 14, 2025. The film hits theaters on July 11, 2025 and marks the official start of the newly revamped DC Universe (DCU), introducing David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent/Superman. Starring alongside him are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
What Does The Trailer Show?
The official trailer for Superman shows the new Superman (played by David Corenswet) trying to find a balance between his Kryptonian heritage and his human side. The film takes a modern approach to the character, portraying the hero as a global protector who fights not just for the United States, but for the entire world.

We also get a first look at Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, who appears to be forging a dangerous alliance, along with brief scenes featuring other well-known DC heroes like Green Lantern (played by Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (played by Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi). One of the trailer's highlights is Superman's loyal companion Krypto, who rushes to the rescue in a critical scene, emphasizing the close bond between the two heroes.
Snyderverse vs. James Gunn — Fans Are Divided
While many fans are excited for the new interpretation of Superman, there are also some critical voices, especially from Snyderverse supporters. Henry Cavill's dark, often serious Superman from Man of Steel and the Justice League films has a loyal fanbase that is skeptical about whether Gunn's version can live up to this legacy.
Let's be honest, people are watching this Superman more to spite Zack Snyder fans not because they suddenly love James Gunn. pic.twitter.com/xDedmsJvpx

One example of this is the controversial scene in the new trailer where Superman is hit by a can and briefly blinks – a detail that many feel is unfitting for a hero typically portrayed as invincible. This scene has sparked heated discussions online, with some fans calling for a tougher, more uncompromising version of the hero, like the one established in the Snyderverse.
Gunn's Superman is a manchild who screams to say "Look at me! See, I'm a good person!" Seething with anger; dictatorial behavior. The suit makes him look like a dictator.

At the same time, there are many fans who welcome James Gunn's fresh approach. They praise the more emotional tone and modern take on the character, which focuses more on the hero's inner turmoil and humanity. A common argument is that Superman shouldn't just be an invincible god, but also a sentient being who struggles with the same moral dilemmas as ordinary people.
It seems this movie dared to ask the bold question "what if Superman was an actual three-dimensional character instead of just an idea to worship" pic.twitter.com/KdCS3Re2L8

A Respectful Transition
Despite the heated discussions among fans, James Gunn and Zack Snyder have expressed mutual respect for each other and are known to be friends. In a recent interview, Snyder emphasized that he respects Gunn's work and is curious to see what direction the new DCU will take. It seems the directors themselves see less conflict than their fans.
