Edinburgh Zoo has celebrated a rare and heartwarming milestone: the birth of a capybara pup, the first born at the facility in Scotland since 2008. The arrival marks a major moment for the zoo’s growing herd, which has expanded from zero to four animals in just over a year.

The newborn belongs to Luna and Rodney, both first-time parents. Keepers at the zoo say the pair are already adjusting well to parenthood, carefully caring for their pup during its earliest and most fragile stage of life. A full health check is expected in the coming weeks, when staff will also determine the baby’s sex and give it an official name.

From Internet Fame To Fatherhood

One of the most interesting parts of the story is the pup’s father, Rodney, who already had a surprising history before arriving in Scotland. He became something of an online sensation after going viral on TikTok as a young capybara, gaining attention as the only offspring of his mother at Dartmoor Zoo.

After moving to Edinburgh Zoo in 2025, Rodney quickly adapted to his new environment and later joined Luna and Cali, two females brought in to rebuild the zoo’s capybara group after more than 15 years without the species. Within a relatively short time, the group established itself, and now it has grown again with the arrival of the newborn.

Learning Life As A Capybara

In the coming months, the young capybara will gradually learn how to behave within the herd. Capybaras are highly social animals, and their survival depends on understanding group dynamics, communication sounds, and shared routines. Keepers say the pup will slowly pick up behaviours such as social hierarchy signals and the wide range of vocal sounds capybaras use to interact.

Capybaras are also fascinating from a biological standpoint. As the largest rodents in the world, they can grow over four feet long and weigh more than 45 kilograms (99.2 lbs). They are semi-aquatic animals, often found near water, and can even hold their breath underwater for several minutes to escape predators in the wild.

A Growing Capybara Story

While Edinburgh Zoo celebrates its newest arrival, not every capybara story in the UK has been as calm. Earlier in the year, a young capybara named Samba made headlines after escaping from Marwell Zoo shortly after arriving. The situation briefly turned into a full search operation, showing just how unpredictable and energetic these animals can be.

For now, though, Edinburgh Zoo is focused on its newest and smallest resident. With a famous TikTok father, attentive parents, and a growing herd around it, this capybara pup is already part of a story that has captured attention both inside and outside the zoo.
