Streamers Wendy Ortiz and DDG recently talked about their impact on Twitch. But instead of approval, the two faced a lot of backlash.
Wendy Ortiz and DDG talked about how they helped Twitch get more mainstream by bringing their TikTok audience to the platform. While many agree that over the last few years Twitch has grown exponentially, a lot of people disagreed that these two streamers played a big role in that.
TikTok Star Turned Twitch Streamer
Wendy Ortiz used to mainly be known for creating content on TikTok. There, she regularly gets millions of views on her videos and accumulated a total of 4,5 Million followers so far. While the type of content she posts is pretty standard – including many lip syncs to viral audios – she became very successful on the app.
Now Wendy expanded her audience by making content on more social media platforms, including Twitch. In a recent viral clip with DDG she said:
"I would never see [...] streamers on TikTok, like any clips or anything until after us."
To which DDG promptly clarified that he believes that they brought "a completely different fanbase over to Twitch". And while that may be the case, other people had a lot of negative things to day about this clip.
Twitch's Growth And It "Becoming Mainstream"
The clip gained a lot of attention from other users. While it may be the case that these two brought their TikTok audience over to Twitch and therefore exposed new people to the site, many were upset with the implication that Twitch became "mainstream" because of them.
Streamer YourRAGE for example replied by saying:
"I'm gonna be quite frank with you: You're wrong. [...] You're in your bubble so you think everything you see is reality."
He then named people who he actually thinks made Twitch mainstream: He said Ninja was the first, but Adin Ross, Kai Cenat, iShowSpeed (despite him not even being on Twitch) and CaseOh followed. Wendy and DDG, he claims, mainly kept their TikTok community and transferred it over to Twitch.
