Influencers always search for next outlandish video idea that will generate more views than any other. But harassing one of the most isolated tribes of the entire planet just for your social media success has to be a new level. At least this YouTuber now faces jail time for it.

The Mission

Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov is an American YouTuber known for travelling to high-risk areas like the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan as can be seen on his channel Neo-Orientalist.

In 2025, he set his mind to contacting one of the most isolated indigenous tribes in the world and began a journey to the North Sentinel Island. The Sentinelese tribe residing there has lived in isolation for thousand of years and is definitely not fond of visitors.

Polyakov had been attempting to get to North Sentinel Island for several months. In April 2025, he successfully reached the island by floating for 9 hours. He blew a whistle to get the tribe's attention, then waded to the beach to leave a can of diet coke and a coconut, take a sample of the sand and record a short video. Then he went back to his boat and took off. Thankfully, he never encountered any Sentinelese people.

He Gets Arrested – For Good Reason

Well, as it turns out, it is strictly forbidden to contact the Sentinelese tribe. Two days after his adventure, the YouTuber was arrested by Indian police.

The Sentinelese are notoriously hostile towards any outsiders attempting communication. They have spears, bows and arrows for hunting animals, which they do not hesitate to use towards visitors. In the 70s and 80s, attempts of contact lead to deadly conflicts, which is one reason why the Indian government declared contacting them as a punishable offense. Even despite this rule, in 2018 a 27-year-old american missionary was killed by the indigenous tribe for setting foot on the island.

Another reason is the potential risks outsiders bring to the island. They could carry diseases which the Sentinelese don't have vaccines or any immunity for, thereby endangering the lives of the tribe members.

The Sentinelese have been left alone to preserve their way of life, and the island is even manned with a guarded patrol by the Indian government. It is also protected by the organization Survival International.

This organization has commented on Polyakov's stunt, declaring it "reckless and idiotic." The group's director said that the Influencer "not only endangered his own life, but they also put the lives of the entire Sentinelese tribe at risk."

So he was charged with entering a prohibited tribal reserve area and violating Indian laws that stop outsiders from interacting with the islanders. If found guilty, he could be in prison for up to 5 years. He is scheduled to appear in court again April 29.

What else is there to say... Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Putting not only your own but also other people's (never mind an entire tribe's) lives at risk for a YouTube video is another level of stupidity and entitlement. At least he may now have to face the consequences of his actions.
