I hope this will be just as good and unhinged as Weapons.
Weapons was one of those movies that just cannot be overstated. Zach Cregger could already show his unique approach to horror-movies with the critically acclaimed Barbarian. And while movie-buffs already knew of Cregger's talent, Weapons really earned him widespread success.
With a budget of less than $40 million, Weapons grossed around $263 million worldwide, making it one of 2025's biggest hits. With a success like that, it is no wonder that Cregger wants to expand the universe, right?
What Is Weapons About?
When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. The parents suspect that the teacher (Julia Garner) has something to do with the disappearance.
The story is split into three main-perspectives as they each get closer to understanding what is going on. We follow the teacher, a father of one of the missing kids (Josh Brolin), and a police officer (Alden Ehrenreich).
The movie explores many themes along its wild ride, such as trauma, power, and American society and culture. First and foremost, the movie tackles grief and how humans can be "weaponized".
What's Next?
In an interview with Fangoria, Cregger was asked about the recent reveal, that Warner Bros. is exploring a prequel centered on the character of Aunt Gladys.
It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.
SPOILER WARNING: Even though every actor gave a stellar performance in this movie, Amy Madigan really stole the show as aunt Gladys. Because in the movie, we find out that the Gladys is a witch that recently moved into the house of the one remaining child. While being the villain, she is both parts scary and quirky. She somehow hit that sweet spot, where she is unnerving whenever she appears on-screen.
One might think that the planned prequel is now just a cash-grab tagged onto the hype of the original, but Cregger confirms that he already planned it before Weapons was even out yet.
I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.
Resident Evil Movie
Before Cregger starts working on the planned spin-off, he has to finish his upcoming project first. Because in 2026, we will get Cregger's movie in the Resident Evil franchise. The movie will not feature any storylines or characters from the game. Rather, Cregger wants to tell his own story.
