A new Horizon game has just been announced, but there’s not much for PlayStation fans to celebrate right now. After Forbidden West, the next iteration of the franchise is on the horizon (pun intended), but it won’t be a PlayStation exclusive. In fact, it won’t even be playable on the PS5.

Horizon Steel Frontiers: What We Know About The New MMORPG

In the newest entry of the Horizon series, Aloy won’t be taking the lead this time. Instead, the franchise is venturing into a new genre: the MMORPG. Players can create their own character and choose which tribe they belong to. The options include the Nora, Tenakth, Utaru, and Oseram.

The game world is said to be inspired by the regions of Arizona and New Mexico. But it is not limited to barren deserts, as the trailer already shows vibrant jungle areas. How many different biomes the final game will include and how seamlessly players will be able to move between them remains unknown for now.

The gameplay is strongly reminiscent of the Monster Hunter series. Once again, players must hunt massive machine creatures and target their weak points with precision. The stamina bar is noticeably similar to the one in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Overall, the focus appears to be on strategic combat and, above all, cooperation with other players in the spirit of a typical MMO.

How the game will ultimately feel to play can only really be judged once it is released. So far, Sony has not announced a specific release date.

Horizon Without PlayStation

The surprising part of the announcement is that the new game will not be released on consoles for the time being, not even on the PS5. Instead, Horizon Steel Frontiers is set to launch exclusively for PC and mobile devices.

Sony presented the title during the G-Star convention in South Korea. The game is being developed by NCSoft, the creators of Guild Wars, in collaboration with Guerrilla Games. According to the announcement, it is a full-scale MMORPG designed specifically for PC and mobile platforms. Thousands of players will be able to explore the world simultaneously, hunt machines, and compete against each other in tribal conflicts.

Steel Frontiers marks a clear shift in direction for the Horizon franchise, moving away from PlayStation exclusivity in favor of a global online experience.

Horizon Takes A New Path

For many fans, Horizon Steel Frontiers is a surprise, perhaps even a bit of a shock. No Aloy, no PS5, no classic single-player adventure, yet the chance to experience the world of Horizon in a completely new way. Whether the game can capture the atmosphere and charm of the previous titles remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the journey through the world of machines is far from over, it is simply leading us down unfamiliar paths.
