I feel like Eivor is an interesting character... on paper. But in execution, she just doesn't get to shine as bright as the other protagonists. And due to Valhalla's structure, she doesn't receive much character development, and the only interesting scene she has is near the end of the game.
For me, Jacob and Evie rank so low on the list, mostly because I find the following assassins much more interesting. Sure, the dynamic between the two can be captivating at times, but I find Jacob's jokes insufferable and I just can't get through any of the cutscenes without rolling my eyes.
Arno starts off strong in Assassin's Creed Unity. He is quick-witted, likable and funny, and that stays this way throughout the game. But he himself is a very underdeveloped character over the runtime of AC Unity, as is the romance subplot with his adopted sister.
The newest character on this list, Basim takes the number 8 spot. I ranked him slightly higher than those you've seen so far because I find his character and his story more interesting. I don't want to spoil anything, but the reveal at the end of Mirage influenced me a lot.
Now we arrived at the truly great protagonists, and Shay is definitely one of them, thanks in large part to his interesting internal struggle. He leaves the brotherhood and joins the Templars, but he still cares for his former comrades. And thanks to his accent, his scenes are especially enjoyable.
Connor is a weird one for a lot of people. Many have criticized his naive and rash nature and his hands-on approach. But I think that all this makes him much more human than the rest of the characters. He is flawed, and he fails, but I enjoyed going through that with him.
It might be personal bias, but Kassandra is easily top five for me. I love her voice acting, her attitude, how she walks and talks, I just like her. Also, I was very invested in bringing her family back together, and I am a sucker for Greek mythology.
Bayek is definitely one of the most relatable characters on this list. He comes off like such a good guy, it's almost impossible to not root for him. His tragic backstory and his care for others earn him the top four spot on this list.
The one who started it all kicks off the top three. I don't think I have to say much here. He's wise, he's capable, and he's got this dangerous aura around him. He will remain in our hearts forever.
Our favorite swashbuckler, sails directly to the number two spot on this list. More of a pirate than an assassin, Edward captured players around the world in an instant with his character arc. In the beginning he was selfish and greedy, but throughout the game he transforms into (kind of) a good person. We were shown his inner conflict through many small moments with his comrades or his dream sequences, which fleshed out his character even more. All in all, an awesome guy!
There he is... The one you've all been waiting for... Ezio Auditore da Firenze. For me, he is the definitive assassin from the Assassin's Creed franchise. He is suave, funny, caring and dangerous all at the same time. It is extremely entertaining to listen to him and his Italian charm. No one comes close to his greatness, and that's why he deserves the number one spot on this list.
