AMD FSR 3 Now Available for Consoles... With A Catch

PC enthusiasts have long enjoyed the AMD FSR 3, which pushes frame rates to new heights. Now, console gamers can look forward to its debut in their realm. But, for now at least, it is sadly limited to just one game.

You've probably heard of boosted frame rate technology from NVIDIA and AMD before. While Nvidia brands it as DLSS 3, AMD prefers the term FSR 3 Frame Generation, or simply AFMF. Essentially, both technologies function similarly, injecting additional intermediary frames to artificially increase frame rates, resulting in smoother gameplay. Unlike Nvidia, AMD's iteration doesn't rely on AI algorithms.

Previously these were PC-only technologies, but now they are making their way to console.

AMD FSR 3: Boosting Frames On PS5 & Xbox Series

After several months of availability on PC, AMD FSR 3 has now extended its reach to console platforms, offering PS5 and Xbox Series players a taste of AFMF. Presently, it's exclusively compatible with the shooter Immortals of Aveum.Initial impressions are promising. Digital Foundry's tech experts put the feature through its paces and noted a remarkable performance uptick of over 70% on average. Instead of the previous fluctuation between 40 and 60 FPS, players can now anticipate a more consistent experience, with frame rates hovering between 80 and 100 FPS.

VRR & 120 Hz Compatibility: Essential Prerequisites

To harness FSR 3's capabilities in Immortals of Aveum, you must have their console hooked up to a VRR-enabled TV, supporting 4K resolution at up to 120 Hz.Moreover, users diving into this new graphical space must acknowledge a slight trade-off in visual fidelity. You want more frames, you have to be pay in image quality.

Nevertheless, for those undeterred by such compromises, AMD FSR 3 holds significant promise. The lingering hope is that this technology will soon proliferate across a wider spectrum of games on console.
