After a long wait, we finally have an update on Bungie's highly anticipated extraction shooter, Marathon.

Bungie believe Marathon can thrive as a unique, hero-based extraction shooter

In a recent video, Joe Ziegler, the Game Director of Marathon, shared insights into the current state of the game and what players can expect moving forward. His remarks suggest that Marathon has significant potential to carve out its own niche in the gaming landscape.

As an extraction shooter, Marathon immerses players in a dynamic environment where they collect valuable loot and try to escape unscathed. But the stakes are high: if you fall in battle, your hard-earned loot and gear become available for other players to claim.

Players can choose from unique "runners" equipped with special abilities—essentially heroes. If you’re familiar with Bungie’s work on the Destiny franchise, you know that blending shooting mechanics with character abilities is where they truly excel.

During the video, Joe Ziegler emphasized that players should not expect further updates or announcements until 2025. Currently, Marathon is still in development, with many elements, including character models, still undergoing refinement.

However, a limited player test has already begun, and plans for expansion are set for 2025. This indicates that while Marathon is not yet ready for a full launch, it is certainly not abandoned. Given this timeline, we anticipate that the game may be released in 2026.

What do you think about Bungie's new project? Does this fresh take on the extraction shooter genre capture your interest, or are you feeling indifferent? We're actually getting quite excited for this...
