Overwatch 2 is getting a new addition and this hero is already stirring up discussion.
Overwatch 2 has announced its newest character. Vendetta will join the Overwatch 2 roster in mid-December, and her role has now been confirmed.
A New Gladiator Enters The Battlefield
The new Overwatch 2 character for Season 20 has been revealed: Vendetta, also known as La Lupa, will officially join the roster on December 9. However, she will already be playable for a limited time starting on November 26 as part of a Hero Trial phase.
The newly released gameplay trailer makes it unmistakably clear: Vendetta is a DPS hero and an exclusively melee-focused one at that. This makes her the first purely melee-based damage hero in the game, deliberately breaking with the previous role design.
With her sword and melee focus, she strongly resembles Magik from Marvel Rivals. Like Magik, she can fire a projectile using her sword. She also has a dash that ends in a swinging sword attack, which again feels very similar to Magik. Her other abilities include a block to deflect incoming damage, and she can throw her sword into the air, jump to it, and attack from above.
Lore, Design, And Early Hints About Her Playstyle
Vendetta hails from Italy, and her design incorporates classic gladiator motifs: heavy armor, sword fighting, and aggressive charges define her look. The trailer clearly shows that her gameplay revolves around high mobility, burst-oriented melee attacks, and a very direct, offensive playstyle. Her style has been described as “high risk, high reward.”
In terms of story, Vendetta is the daughter of Antonio Giordani, a high-ranking Talon official who was killed by Reaper. Her motivation is therefore driven strongly by revenge. Her name, Vendetta, which means “revenge” in Italian, further reinforces this theme. How exactly she will fit into the overarching Overwatch story remains to be seen and will likely only be revealed with her full introduction.
Inspiration In Both Directions: Why We Ultimately Only Stand To Gain
After her gameplay reveal, many players discussed her strong resemblance to Magik. Some even called Vendetta a shameless copy. Instead of seeing this as a problem, it can also be viewed positively, because the two biggest hero shooters now influence one another. Overwatch shaped this genre for many years, so it is only natural that Marvel Rivals took inspiration from it. Now the process continues as Overwatch introduces elements that feel similar to Rivals.
Rather than arguing about who copied whom, we can appreciate that the competition between the two games results in more new heroes, fresher ideas and more diverse character designs. With Vendetta, Overwatch 2 adds a purely melee DPS character to its hero lineup. This adds another dimension that enriches the existing selection in a meaningful way.
