The story of Dark and Darker is marked by ups and downs. Introduced at the Steam Next Fest 2023, the extraction dungeon crawler made a big splash and managed to acquire a huge fanbase. Then came the downer: the developers were sued by their former employer, and the game had to be removed from Steam.
While it remained available through the official Dark and Darker website, it disappeared from the classic storefronts. At the beginning of the year, a return to Steam was even on the table, but it never materialized. Now it's set to come to another store.
Dark and Darker Prepares For Epic Debut
On the Dark and Darker Discord server, Ironmace, the devs behind the game, announced that they will make their game available on Epic Games.
With increased confidence in the quality of our game, we have started preparations on introducing Dark and Darker to a wider audience. As a first step, we are happy to announce the launch of the Dark and Darker store page on the Epic Games Store.
With this, Dark and Darker is available on a classic digital storefront for the first time in over a year. Previously, players had to purchase the game through the website and download a separate client for it. This was inconvenient for many players, as platforms like Steam, Epic, and others provide the possibility of consolidating the own game collection in one place.
Especially for indie games, this can mean a rapid decrease in player base, as players prefer having their games in one accessible location. Therefore, it's important for Dark and Darker to return to such a platform, even if it's not the arguably largest storefront by Valve.
While the game cannot be purchased on Epic yet, the store page is already available, and you can add it to your wishlist. The exact release date for when you can start playing Dark and Darker on Epic has not been announced yet, but it shouldn't be too long of a wait.
What Dark and Darker Is About
Dark and Darker is an extraction dungeon crawler with battle royale elements. Set in a dark fantasy world, you venture into dangerous dungeons with your adventurer group, where you battle against monsters and other players.
Following the typical battle royale format, the playable area gradually shrinks during a match, leading to inevitable encounters with other players. The last one standing wins, while those who die lose their equipment.
The game is indeed a hardcore experience, which has even spawned some imitators. Dungeonborne was introduced a year after Dark and Darker at the Steam Next Fest 2024 and follows a similar principle. So, when this game is released on Steam, you'll have an alternative if you don't have an Epic account (or if you've forgotten your login credentials).
