Switch 2 Games For $70? Insider Predicts Price Hike

Games are becoming increasingly expensive with each new generation of consoles, that is nothing new. But what can we expect from the Nintendo Switch 2 and upcoming titles? Will we have to live with an industry standard of $70 or maybe even more?

The Nintendo Switch 2 is on its way to us, and so are its games. So far we don't know what exactly Nintendo is cooking for us, but there are (of course) speculations about a new Mario Kart title, after we got a sneak peek into some gameplay snippets in the latest Nintendo Switch 2 trailer. Although there is nothing officially announced yet, we can expect a return of some Nintendo classics such as a new Mario Party, Zelda or as mentioned, Mario Kart. But how deep would we have to dig into our pockets for upcoming Switch games? Let's take a look!

Nintendo Switch 2 Games Are Said To Become More Expensive

A well-known leaker on X has recently hinted at a possible price increase for current Nintendo Switch titles, following a rise in prices across South America. In a post, they used Pokémon Scarlet as an example: At launch, the game was already priced at a hefty 1,199 pesos in Mexico. Recently, that price increased to 1,399 pesos – an equivalent of a $10 jump, bringing the game’s price to $69.

This price hike seems like a subtle hint at what we can expect for upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 titles.

While this might seem surprising, price increases in gaming are nothing new. Video game prices have always risen over time. For current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, $70 has become the industry standard for AAA titles. This is largely due to increasing production values. As technology advances, game development costs rise, and so do retail prices. GTA 6 is even rumored to hike the prices up even more with $100 for the Standard Edition.

The real question, however, is whether the Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to match those production values in terms of performance and quality. Like its predecessor, it’s expected to be a compact console with relatively lower-spec hardware. If game prices continue to rise, the hardware needs to keep up. But maybe we will find out more about that at the upcoming Nintendo Direct specifically for the Switch 2, held on April 2.
