The Twitch stars Maya Higa and Adapt were hoping to capture some spectacular footage of Alaska’s wildlife during their trip. But during their livestream, they got a lot more than they probably bargained for!
Bear Suddenly Walks Straight Toward The Streamers
The two streamers were visiting Katmai National Park alongside experienced guides, a location known for its large brown bear population. During the stream, they got the chance to watch several of the impressive animals from remarkably close range. But one encounter quickly became much more intense than expected.
Maya and Adapt were sitting on a tree stump watching the bears when a young bear suddenly started walking straight toward them. Maya suggested that they should move away, but Adapt was convinced it was already too late. He told her to stay completely still.
Then came the unexpected twist: The bear suddenly jumped into the water to catch a fish. Maya and Adapt could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Meanwhile, the livestream chat completely lost it. Viewers could hardly believe what they were watching unfold right in front of them. The clip quickly went viral – but see for yourself:

“My heart is beating out of my chest,” Maya said as she reacted to the encounter. And it's easy to see why: The bear had come within just a few feet of them. For a brief moment, the two streamers must have wondered whether the encounter was about to take a much more dangerous turn.
Luckily, the animal had something else on its mind. It appeared to be focused solely on finding its next meal.
Why The Bears Don't Immediately Attack Humans
According to their guide, there is a reason why the bears in Katmai can appear relatively comfortable around people. The brown bears have been protected in the area for many years and regularly encounter visitors. As a result, they have become accustomed to humans.
The guide explained to Maya during the stream that the bears have essentially learned to ignore the people around them. Another important factor is the abundance of food available in Katmai during the annual salmon runs. The bears are primarily focused on catching fish and finding their next meal rather than interacting with humans. Katmai National Park is famous for its brown bears, with the National Park Service estimating that around 2,200 live in the park and preserve.
The annual salmon runs attract huge numbers of bears to the rivers, allowing visitors to observe them from unusually close distances. However, encounters with these powerful animals should never be taken lightly. Visitors are advised to keep their distance, remain calm and follow the instructions of guides and park staff.
For Maya and Adapt, the trip will likely be one they won't forget anytime soon. They set out to show their viewers the wild side of Alaska, only to find themselves face-to-face with a brown bear that got much closer than either streamer probably expected.
