Four of the eight quarter finalists for Worlds 2026 have already been determined.
Another crucial day of Worlds 2026 is complete. T1 and Invictus Gaming won their 2-1 series and have officially secured spots in the Knockout Stage. Movistar KOI and LYON are not eliminated yet, but both fall to 2-2 and now have only one final chance.
T1 and Worlds – It Is Starting to Become Ridiculous
T1 have reached the Knockout Stage once again. What would be a major achievement for almost any other team has started to feel almost routine for this organization.
The three-time defending champions swept Movistar KOI 2-0 and moved to a 3-1 record. Whenever T1 or SK Telecom T1 have attended Worlds, the organization has never finished outside the top four. In 2026, that incredible run remains alive for at least another round.
Game 1 was much closer than the final scoreline suggests. MKOI started well, handled the early objectives cleanly and repeatedly forced T1 into uncomfortable situations. The game only began to shift around Baron, where the Europeans lost two consecutive skirmishes.
MKOI still found another opening later. But during the decisive Dragon Soul fight, David “Supa” Martínez García stepped too far forward on Kai’Sa and was caught by Choi “Doran” Hyeon-jun’s Ambessa ultimate. T1 immediately converted the pick into an ace and then the win.
Game 2 was far more brutal. T1 controlled the map almost from the opening minutes and had already built a lead of around 10,000 gold by the 20-minute mark. MKOI managed to win one teamfight, but by then the deficit was simply too large to realistically recover from.
Doran Becomes the Difference Maker
Doran was particularly impressive. The top laner finished the series with a combined 10/0/17 KDA and did not die once across either game. His Ambessa ultimate decided the most important fight in Game 1, before he took over the top lane again on Gwen in the second.
That is especially interesting because international discussions around T1 usually revolve around Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, Mun “Oner” Hyeon-jun or Ryu “Keria” Min-seok. Against MKOI, however, T1 did not need a classic Faker masterclass. The biggest difference came from top lane.
That is exactly what makes this team so dangerous at Worlds. T1 do not always need to win through the same condition. If Faker does not completely take over a game, Doran can carry. If top lane stays quiet, Oner or the bot lane can take control.
Right before the Knockout Stage, the defending champions once again look significantly more dangerous than they did during many parts of the regular season.
iG Reach the Top Eight for the First Time Since 2019
The second qualification of the day was much more dramatic. Invictus Gaming defeated LYON 2-1 and have reached the Worlds playoffs for the first time since 2019. For Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok and Song “Rookie” Eui-jin, that creates a special storyline: both were already part of the legendary iG roster that won Worlds in 2018. Eight years later, they are once again together in the Knockout Stage
Game 1 went relatively comfortably to iG. LYON tried to create early pressure but struggled to find a way back onto the map afterward. Kacper “Inspired” Słoma in particular had a difficult start on Nocturne, while iG calmly converted their advantages.
LYON responded strongly, however. Their slower setup worked much better in Game 2, with Niship “Dhokla” Doshi on Olaf and Jonah “Isles” Rosario on Alistar enabling several strong late-game teamfights. The series genuinely went all the way to Game 3.
JiaQi Basically Decides Game 3 in Lane
The deciding game swung very early. Following an Inspired gank, Zi “JiaQi” Jia-Qi found two kills on Caitlyn in a 2v3 situation. From that point, the bot lane was effectively broken open. By around 15 minutes, JiaQi reportedly held an individual gold advantage of roughly 2,800 over Lucian, while iG were around 4,000 gold ahead overall
LYON were then left with a fundamental problem: almost every lane needed attention, while Inspired could not possibly cover the entire map. JiaQi scaled out of control, TheShy also built a clear advantage, and iG closed the series cleanly from there.
Yan “Wei” Yang-Wei was named series MVP, but JiaQi remains one of the biggest positive surprises of Worlds. The ADC is playing at his first World Championship and still does not look remotely out of place next to veterans such as TheShy, Rookie and Tian “Meiko” Ye.
MKOI and LYON Are Still Alive – Barely
For Movistar KOI and LYON, the losses do not mean elimination just yet. Both teams now sit at 2-2 and will get one final best-of-three in Round 5. The winner reaches the quarterfinals. The loser is eliminated.
For MKOI in particular, that is painful. The team once sat at 2-0 and had a first chance to qualify directly against Dplus KIA. After losses to DK and T1, that comfortable opening has completely disappeared.
LYON took a different path. The LCS representative surprised early in the tournament and even took a game from Gen.G. Against iG, they once again showed enough quality to keep the series competitive. But LYON no longer have any margin for error either: one BO3 will decide their entire Worlds run.
Korea Already Have Three Teams in the Quarterfinals
T1’s victory also makes the regional picture increasingly clear. Gen.G and Dplus KIA had already qualified at 3-0. T1 now join them at 3-1. That means three of the four Korean teams are already locked into the final eight. Only Hanwha Life Esports still have to fight for their tournament life.
China now also have their first confirmed team through with iG. Top Esports and Bilibili Gaming still face each other for another Knockout spot, while Anyone’s Legend have already suffered a shocking 0-3 elimination.
The West, meanwhile, is still waiting for its first confirmed quarterfinalist. MKOI and LYON missed their chance to change that. G2, Karmine Corp, Team Liquid and LØS are also still fighting for survival.
T1 Are Back – But iG May Have the More Interesting Story
Yesterday therefore delivered two very different qualification stories. With T1, advancing almost feels expected at this point. No matter how the season goes, no matter which seed sits next to their name: once Worlds begins, T1 somehow end up in the Knockout Stage again.
For iG, it feels completely different. TheShy and Rookie have led the organization back into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2019, while a Worlds rookie like JiaQi has simultaneously become one of the team’s most important players.
For MKOI and LYON, meanwhile, nothing is over yet. Both still have exactly one chance left. But there are no safety nets anymore. One BO3 separates them from the quarterfinals – or the end of their season
