Crunchyroll Removes Comments After Onslaught Of Homophobic & Toxic Statements

Crunchyroll, the biggest online source for anime, has disabled their comment function. Could it be because of the influx of trolls review bombing Yaoi, aka boy's love, anime?

Crunchyroll has a decent comment function on their website where fans can discuss anime and episodes right underneath. But this function has been removed recently, though the streaming service did not clarify why they did so.

One of the reason many believe is an influx of trolls online who have been review bombing Yaoi, better known as Boys Love anime, on the site.

Crunchyroll Removes Comments

Crunchyroll has removed their comment sections and according to their official Help portal, it's been confirmed that this has been done to create a "safe and respectful community environment." In other words, the comments were removed to maintain this standard. So, no more user generated content will be available on the streaming service for now.

One thing that is staying? The rating system for shows, so if there are any trolls out there upset over an animated show, they can let out their aggressions there...

But what led to this? Well, it was recently noted by content creator Mother's Basement on Twitter/X that the Summer 2024 boys' love anime Twilight Out of Focus has been receiving a flurry of toxic and hate filled comments. Why? Because it's an LGBTQIA+ series that was being promoted on the Crunchyroll website.

Trolls online felt that Crunchyroll has been shoving LGBTQIA+ content down their throats, which they're sick and tired of... but let's be real there is maybe one or two Yaoi/Yuri that get added to Crunchyroll every season, while there are how many straight shōjo/shōnen/isekai harem shows added every season? But I digress....

Many fans are actually upset over the removal of comments, though, since people enjoyed writing reviews and adding discussions under episodes. Unfortunately, it seems that Crunchyroll had no way of filtering out the hate comments and toxic behavior and decided to nuke the entirety of comments and user-based content on their site.
