March 2020 will see the last Rocket League update on Linux and MacOS due to the technical limitations of these operating systems. The devs offer refunds.

Rocket League is an extremely popular game both as a casual party experience and as an esport. The car-based ball game hybrid was released back in 2015 to extremely positive fan reception and raving reviews. One of the many features Rocket League excels in is true cross-platform play. This will somewhat change soon.

The news initially broke on Steam and later got confirmed in a Reddit discussion. According to the developers, the reason for excluding these two OS is purely technical.

The studio expressed plans to update the Windows client from 32-bit to 64-bit make a jump from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11. According to Psyonix, this will allow them to develop "new types of content and features we'd like", which is currently impossible on the DX9-based systems.

According to the devs, less than 0.3% of their player base is using Linux and MacOS and this low number cannot justify the allocation of resources for platform-specific features. That’s why the studio is offering a full refund to all users who feel their experience with the game will be affected in a negative fashion after the March update.

In case you’re one of the rare Rocket League fans playing on the discontinued systems and the lack of support is a deal-breaker, you’ll need to contact Steam. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to ask for your money back:

  • Go to the Steam Support website here
  • Select Purchases
  • Select Rocket League (you may need to select “View complete purchasing history” to see it)
  • Select “I would like a refund”, then “I'd like to request a refund
  • From the Reason dropdown menu, select “My issue isn’t listed
  • In notes, write “Please refund my Mac/Linux version of Rocket League, Psyonix will be discontinuing support

Despite this minor hiccup, the rest of the can continue playing the game on PC and all major consoles, just like before and look forward to the flashy new features promised by the devs.
