New & Revised PS5 Model Launched By Sony

Sony has launched a revised PlayStation 5 model with a few adjustments. Sounds grand, but is the complete opposite.

I know, I probably scared the living hell out of you when you read the title: “I don’t even have the normal PS5 yet, how are they already launching a revised version? What if it’s already a pro?”

It’s not.

Sony has not launched the PS5 Pro, nor have they launched the PS5 slim. Though, the new and revised PS5 is in fact 300g lighter, has a revised serial number and a screw for the base stand of the PS5 that you can now adjust by hand and don’t have to use a screwdriver. I wish I was joking, but I'm not. The folks over at Press-Start were kind enough to even share a picture of this handy new screw.

Currently, the only country that seems to have these new & revised PS5 models is Australia, so unless you live in Australia, you will not be able to adjust your base stand by hand… but have to use a screwdriver. If only the world had bigger problems...

The 300g difference, however, is what I find more interesting. As fans of the console have pointed out, 300g is not just a tiny component, so we wonder what it was that Sony has removed or adjusted. Guess we will only find out about this once somebody decides to wreck their PS5 and dissect it like the frog that my teacher wanted me to dissect in High School… bad memories.

[UPDATE: August 30, 2021]

We now know that the 300g difference comes from the new PS5 model having a much smaller heatsink than the standard one that you know. This also makes the new PS5 run slightly quieter.

To sum it up, don't have a heart attack over a possible proper new PS5 model, this ain't it. You will get your PS5 before the PS5 Pro or the PS5 Slim is released, we're sure of it. Why do we think so? Well, we decided to speculate a little below.

Will There Be A PS5 Pro?

Sony has not commented on a PS5 Pro yet, though if they follow the pattern of the PS4, then we suspect a PS5 Pro to hit the market in 2023, which is the same release schedule as for the PS4/PS4 Pro.

You hear that? You still have two more years to get a PS5. Whether yours will be with a screw that you can adjust by hand or by screwdriver is unknown. (This feels like a joke, I know that myself.)
