It has been rumored for ages that developer Certain Affinity was working on a battle royale (BR) game set in the Halo universe, known so far only under the code name Project Tatanka. Many players looked forward to a breath of fresh air after the disappointment of Halo Infinite, hoping that it would help get the legendary franchise out of its dire state.

Well, it’s about time to lose all hope, at least if we’re to believe a new report claiming that Project Tatanka has been canceled.

Long-Rumored Halo Battle Royale Spin-Off Project Tatanka Has Apparently Been Canceled

Project Tatanka, which has been in development for years but never officially announced, has apparently been canceled. This was claimed on the XboxEra podcast, namely by both co-hosts Shpeshal_Nick and Sikamikanico independently. Nick emphasizes that he heard it was outright canceled, meaning that the game will not be further developed and released – at least in the form we have heard of so far.

What is still possible, is that Tatanka has internally involved into a different kind of shooter. It seems unlikely at this point that the BR game, which has been rumored to be in development since January 2022, will ever see the light of day.

However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier previously claimed that this project has changed significantly and possibly evolved into a different kind of game. So whatever Certain Affinity worked on for the last few years could still come out, but don’t expect it to be a Halo BR.
