15 Movie Myths You Probably Still Believe

1-15

Snow White

15. Disney's first animated movie

Most people would confidently say Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Disney's first animated feature, but something beat it to the punch by seven months. "The Academy Award Review of Walt Disney Cartoons" came out earlier in 1937, running 42 minutes and qualifying as a feature by the Academy's own definition of at least 40 minutes. It's a collection of previously released shorts rather than an original story, which is why some people discount it, but technically, the title belongs to it. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Poltergeist 1982

14. Steven Spielberg was the director of Poltergeist

Tobe Hooper is credited as the director of Poltergeist, but rumors have swirled for years that Spielberg was really the one calling the shots. Several cast and crew members suggested at the time that Spielberg's involvement went well beyond his producer and screenwriter credits. Both men have consistently maintained that Hooper directed the film, and taking that away from him based on rumor alone seems pretty unfair. | © MGM

Cropped Singin in the Rain

13. The water is milk in Singin' in the Rain

The claim that milk was mixed into the water to make the rain more visible on camera has been attached to Singin' in the Rain for decades. Co-director Stanley Donen flat out denied it, explaining that the trick to shooting rain is backlighting, not dairy products. Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly also said it wasn't true, so that's pretty much the whole cast and crew calling it out. | © MGM

Cropped The Wizard of Oz

12. Munchkin suicide in The Wizard of Oz

For years, a dark rumor circulated that a figure visible in the background of a scene in The Wizard of Oz was a Munchkin actor who had hanged themselves on set, with nobody noticing until the film was already finished. The story stuck around for a surprisingly long time before anyone got a clear enough look to put it to rest. When the film came out on Blu-ray, the figure turned out to be a bird that the studio had borrowed from the Los Angeles Zoo. | © MGM

Alien

11. The cast didn't know about the Chestburster in Alien

The story that the Alien cast was completely blindsided by the Chestburster scene is one of Hollywood's most repeated pieces of trivia, but it doesn't really hold up. The scene is described in detail in the screenplay, blood pumping machines were set up under the table, and the crew were all wearing raincoats, so everyone knew something messy was coming. Actor Veronica Cartwright has even said they were shown models of the creature beforehand, meaning those shocked reactions were just good acting. | © 20th Century Studios

Fargo

10. A Person died looking for the money because of Fargo

A Japanese woman named Takako Konishi was found dead in Minnesota after passing through Fargo, and some sloppy early reporting turned her death into an urban legend about someone who believed the movie's hidden money was real. The story spread far enough that it eventually inspired its own film called "Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter." In reality, the circumstances of her death had nothing to do with chasing fictional ransom cash. | © Gramercy Pictures

Gremlins

9. Gremlins after midnight

The famous "don't feed them after midnight" rule actually applies to the Mogwai, the cute fuzzy creatures, not the Gremlins themselves. Feeding a Mogwai after midnight is precisely what causes it to transform into a Gremlin in the first place. Since the movie is called "Gremlins" and not "Mogwai," it's easy to see how that detail got scrambled over the years. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Cropped Friday The 13th

8. Jason Voorhees is the killer in Friday the 13th

In the original Friday the 13th, the killer is actually Jason's mother, Pamela, who is out for revenge over her son's drowning death at Camp Crystal Lake. Jason himself didn't take over as the main villain until the second film, and he didn't even get the iconic hockey mask until the third. The franchise became so associated with him that most people just assume he was always the one doing the chasing. | © Paramount Pictures

Leonardo Di Caprio Titanic 1997

7. Jack could have survived in Titanic

The debate over whether Rose could have budged over and saved Jack has been going on since 1997. Two people on that piece of wreckage at the same time would have tipped it over, which the film actually shows and which has been tested and confirmed multiple times since. Though the "take turns floating" argument is still very much on the table. | © Paramount Pictures

Three Men and a Baby

6. Background ghost in Three Men and a Baby

There's a long-running rumor that a ghost can be spotted lurking behind the curtains in one scene of this '80s comedy. The figure is actually just a cardboard standee of Jack, one of the main characters who happens to be an actor in the film. Even Tom Selleck has gone on record to debunk it, and that's a man you don't argue with. | © Touchstone Pictures

The Crow

5. Accidental death footage found its way in The Crow

Brandon Lee was fatally shot on set when a dummy bullet left in a prop gun discharged during filming of The Crow. A lot of people believe the footage of the incident ended up in the final cut of the film, but that's not what happened. The tape was actually destroyed after being used as evidence in the investigation into his death. | © Lionsgate

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

4. Temple of Doom is a sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark

Most people assume Temple of Doom follows Raiders of the Lost Ark chronologically, but it actually takes place a year before it, making it a prequel. George Lucas reportedly set it earlier, specifically to avoid using Nazis as villains twice in a row. They did come back for the third film anyway, so that plan only held up for so long. | © Paramount Pictures

The Nightmare Before Christmas

3. Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas

Almost everyone assumes Burton directed this The Nightmare before Christmas, and honestly, the title does most of the work in creating that confusion. He did create the original story and characters and had a hand in producing, but the actual director was Henry Selick. Selick later went on to direct James and the Giant Peach and Coraline, so the man clearly had a thing for dark stop-motion animation. | © Touchstone Pictures

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Episode V 1980

2. "Luke, I am your father."

Most people are completely confident they know this line by heart, but the actual quote from Darth Vader is "No, I am your father." The Luke version spread so far through pop culture parodies and impressions that it started to feel like the real thing. It joins a long list of famous movie misquotes that people will argue about until the end of time. | © 20th Century Fox

Jaws

1. The "Bigger boat" quote from Jaws

Jaws is one of the most iconic blockbusters ever made, and nearly everyone thinks they know its most famous line. In the scene, Brody spots the massive shark while throwing chum off Quint's boat, backs into the cabin, and says, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." The problem is most people quote it as "we're gonna need a bigger boat," which sounds close enough but isn't actually what he said. | © Universal Studios
