15 Actors Who Almost Quit In The Middle Of Filming

1-15

Entertainment - August 26th 2026, 20:30 GMT+2
Brad Pitt Interview with the Vampire 1994 1

1. Brad Pitt — Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Louis spends most of Interview with the Vampire wishing he were somewhere else, and Brad Pitt hardly needed to fake that misery. Six months of night shoots, a windowless Pinewood soundstage, heavy makeup and uncomfortable contact lenses left him desperate to escape. Pitt eventually called producer David Geffen and asked what leaving would cost him. The answer was approximately $40 million, a number powerful enough to cure even the most severe case of vampire fatigue. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Al Pacino The Godfather 1972 1

2. Al Pacino — The Godfather (1972)

An ankle injury usually terrifies a leading man; for Al Pacino, it briefly looked like divine intervention. Feeling unwanted and convinced Paramount was preparing to replace him, he injured himself while jumping onto a moving car after filming Michael Corleone’s restaurant assassinations. Lying in the gutter, Pacino felt relieved that he might finally be released from The Godfather. Instead, the production injected his ankle with cortisone, finished the stunt with a double and kept him after executives saw the restaurant footage. | © Paramount Pictures

3. Jim Carrey — How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

The Grinch’s smile was built on itchy yak hair, restrictive prosthetics, false teeth and contact lenses that reduced Jim Carrey’s vision to a narrow tunnel. After enduring the transformation process once, he offered to return his reported $20 million salary—with interest—if the studio would let him quit. Producer Brian Grazer responded by bringing in Richard Marcinko, a former Navy SEAL who had trained CIA operatives to withstand torture. Carrey learned coping techniques and survived 92 days inside the green suit. | © Universal Pictures

Hugh Jackman X2 X Men United

4. Hugh Jackman — X2: X-Men United (2003)

A later investigation into the troubled production of X2: X-Men United alleged that an unscheduled stunt was attempted without the necessary safety personnel, leaving Hugh Jackman injured and bleeding. Producer Tom DeSanto halted filming, but the studio reportedly tried to remove him following a confrontation with director Bryan Singer. Jackman then joined most of the principal cast in threatening to walk if DeSanto was forced out. Singer’s representative denied that the reported incident occurred, but several cast members have since described the set as deeply dysfunctional. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped gladiator 1

5. Russell Crowe — Gladiator (2000)

Maximus could defeat tigers, rival gladiators and one extremely needy emperor, but the unfinished Gladiator screenplay nearly sent Russell Crowe running for the airport. He considered the early material “absolute rubbish,” particularly its strange ideas about celebrity gladiators endorsing olive oil. Production began with only 21 pages that Crowe and Ridley Scott fully agreed upon, leaving much of the movie to be rebuilt during filming. Scott’s promise that they would shoot nothing Crowe considered dishonest ultimately persuaded him to stay. | © DreamWorks Pictures

Ian Mc Kellen The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 2012 1

6. Ian McKellen — The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

Gandalf finally met an enemy he could not intimidate with a staff: green-screen technology. To preserve the characters’ differences in height, Ian McKellen often performed alone while the actors playing Bilbo and the dwarves worked elsewhere. The isolation became so distressing that he broke down in tears and wondered whether he should abandon The Hobbit—or acting altogether. Peter Jackson recognized the problem, while the crew decorated McKellen’s tent with familiar Middle-earth props and organized an impromptu Gandalf appreciation day. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Halle Berry X2 X Men United 2003 1

7. Halle Berry — X2: X-Men United (2003)

Storm’s most explosive moment in X2 happened nowhere near a lightning machine. Following the disputed stunt that injured Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry reportedly joined her castmates in confronting Bryan Singer and threatening to quit if producer Tom DeSanto was dismissed. Alan Cumming later recalled Berry delivering a particularly memorable final word to the director, while Berry herself has described confronting Singer as one of her greatest days on a set. She completed the argument, boarded a plane and flew home wearing her Storm costume. | © 20th Century Fox

Daisy Ridley Star Wars The Force Awakens 2015 1

8. Daisy Ridley — Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Rey appeared remarkably comfortable piloting the Millennium Falcon for someone who initially felt overwhelmed by an assistant holding an umbrella over her. During her first days on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Daisy Ridley was surrounded by an enormous crew, barely knew anyone and felt physically sick from the pressure. While waiting behind Rey’s speeder, she became convinced that she could not handle the job and seriously considered leaving. The unknown television actress stayed, and the franchise promptly rearranged her entire life. | © Lucasfilm

Mark Ruffalo 13 Going on 30 2004 1

9. Mark Ruffalo — 13 Going on 30 (2004)

A Michael Jackson dance routine came closer to defeating Mark Ruffalo than any Marvel supervillain. Ruffalo struggled badly while rehearsing the “Thriller” sequence for 13 Going on 30, especially beside Jennifer Garner, who had spent years studying ballet and learned the choreography with embarrassing ease. Garner later revealed that he hated rehearsals so much that he nearly dropped out of the movie. Ruffalo eventually shuffled his way through the scene, and his visibly uncomfortable dancing arguably made Matt Flamhaff even more lovable. | © Columbia Pictures

Milla Jovovich Resident Evil 2002 1

10. Milla Jovovich — Resident Evil (2002)

The first Resident Evil nearly lost Alice before she had encountered a single zombie. Milla Jovovich arrived in Berlin to discover that Paul W. S. Anderson had expanded Michelle Rodriguez’s role and transferred several of Alice’s major action sequences to Rain. Furious at being reduced to what she considered the tag-along girlfriend, Jovovich told Anderson she would fly home the following morning. He visited her hotel, and the pair spent three hours comparing drafts page by page until Alice regained her central place in the movie. | © Screen Gems

Michelle Rodriguez The Fast and the Furious 2001 1

11. Michelle Rodriguez — The Fast and the Furious (2001)

Letty Ortiz’s loyalty to Dom was nearly decided by Michelle Rodriguez walking away from The Fast and the Furious. The original screenplay placed Letty in a love triangle with Dom and Brian, a recycled Point Break ingredient Rodriguez believed made no sense for the character. Still new to studio filmmaking, she cried, announced that she was quitting and even asked not to be sued. Vin Diesel backed her objection, the romantic subplot disappeared and Letty became the fiercely loyal mechanic who helped define the entire franchise. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped Waynes World

12. Mike Myers — Wayne’s World (1992)

A Queen cassette became Mike Myers’ non-negotiable condition for making Wayne’s World. Producers wanted the famous car sequence accompanied by a more contemporary Guns N’ Roses track, but Myers insisted that Wayne, Garth and their friends had to headbang to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” When persuasion failed, he threatened to leave the movie altogether. Paramount surrendered, the scene became the film’s signature moment and Queen’s operatic epic climbed back to No. 2 on the American charts—an unusually decisive victory for arguing over the car stereo. | © Paramount Pictures

Gene hackman the french connection cropped processed by imagy

13. Gene Hackman — The French Connection (1971)

Popeye Doyle repelled Gene Hackman. The actor hated the detective’s racism and casual brutality, while director William Friedkin deliberately provoked him to capture the anger he wanted on camera. Hackman walked off the production on its second day and repeatedly left the set after emotionally exhausting takes, but he kept returning. The ordeal produced an Oscar-winning performance that Hackman remained uncomfortable watching, proving that his disgust with Doyle was not an obstacle to the character—it was practically the fuel in his tank. | © 20th Century Fox

Carl Weathers Rocky IV 1985

14. Carl Weathers — Rocky IV (1985)

Apollo Creed’s exhibition fight almost ended with Carl Weathers defeating the production instead of Ivan Drago. According to Sylvester Stallone’s account, Dolph Lundgren threw Weathers roughly three feet into a corner while filming, prompting the furious actor to storm out and announce that he was calling his agent to quit. Shooting stopped for four days while Stallone mediated between them. Weathers eventually returned after Lundgren agreed to reduce his aggression, allowing Apollo to receive the fatal beating only when the cameras were safely rolling. | © MGM/United Artists

Emma Thompson Brideshead Revisited 2008 1

15. Emma Thompson — Brideshead Revisited (2008)

Emma Thompson’s ultimatum had nothing to do with her own role in Brideshead Revisited. After learning that a producer had pressured Hayley Atwell to lose weight, Thompson warned the production that she would leave if anyone raised the subject with her costar again. Atwell was only beginning her film career and later credited Thompson with reminding her that she had been hired as an actor, not a model. The comments stopped, Thompson stayed and the producers wisely avoided testing whether she was bluffing. | © Miramax Films

1-15

The contract was signed, the costume fitted and the cameras already rolling—then walking off set suddenly sounded like the better option. Dangerous stunts, clashes with directors, brutal working conditions and sheer exhaustion pushed some major stars dangerously close to quitting. A few needed serious persuasion to return, while others had already packed their bags. These 15 actors nearly abandoned their movies before filming was complete.
