Orlando Bloom Kingdom of Heaven 2005 — 15. Orlando Bloom — Kingdom of Heaven (2005)

Ridley Scott handed Orlando Bloom the armor, the inspirational speeches, and the unenviable task of anchoring a historical epic opposite actors such as Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, and Edward Norton. When *Kingdom of Heaven* struggled at the American box office, Bloom’s restrained performance was frequently blamed for leaving the film without a commanding center. The later director’s cut revealed a richer story and restored much of the missing character development, but it could not retroactively change the actor’s reputation. Bloom had been judged using a theatrical version that removed many of the scenes needed to make his reluctant hero feel fully alive. | © 20th Century Fox

Alden Ehrenreich Solo A Star Wars Story — 14. Alden Ehrenreich — Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

“Play Harrison Ford, but do not imitate Harrison Ford” is less an acting direction than an elaborate workplace prank. Alden Ehrenreich entered *Solo* under impossible scrutiny, with rumors about an emergency acting coach already shaping public opinion before anyone had seen his performance. When the movie became the first major theatrical disappointment of Disney’s *Star Wars* era, his face naturally appeared on the failure notice. Production upheaval, costly reshoots, weak marketing, and franchise fatigue mattered far more, and even former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy later acknowledged that Ehrenreich had been placed in an impossible position. | © Lucasfilm

Shia La Beouf Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — 13. Shia LaBeouf — Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

The refrigerator survived a nuclear explosion, but Mutt Williams never survived the audience. Shia LaBeouf’s leather-jacketed heir to Indiana Jones was mocked for his attitude, his monkey-swinging jungle sequence, and the increasingly obvious attempt to prepare him for a franchise handoff nobody had requested. LaBeouf later accepted more responsibility than most actors would, saying he had failed to make the character work. Still, blaming him alone lets the aliens, digital effects, uneven screenplay, and that famous refrigerator escape quietly sneak out through the museum’s back door. | © Paramount Pictures

Jared Leto Suicide Squad — 12. Jared Leto — Suicide Squad (2016)

Jared Leto spent months promising a Joker of unprecedented intensity, complete with disturbing on-set gifts and enough method-acting stories to fill Arkham’s employee handbook. Then *Suicide Squad* arrived, and his tattooed gangster appeared mainly in disconnected fragments, purring through a performance that critics found more exhausting than frightening. Leto became the mascot for the film’s chaotic excess, even though director David Ayer later said that the studio radically altered his cut and removed much of the Joker material. The hype belonged to Leto, but the incoherent theatrical version had several fingerprints all over it. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Sophie Turner Dark Phoenix 2019 — 11. Sophie Turner — Dark Phoenix (2019)

Sophie Turner went from surviving the *Game of Thrones* finale to becoming the face of another franchise ending almost immediately afterward. *Dark Phoenix* placed Jean Grey at the center of the story, so Turner naturally absorbed criticism when the movie delivered weak reviews, a disastrous opening weekend, and the lowest worldwide gross of the main *X-Men* series. Her subdued performance was called emotionally distant, but the production had already endured extensive reshoots, delays, and uncertainty surrounding Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Turner was expected to carry a superhero finale that often felt like everyone involved had already started packing their desks. | © 20th Century Fox

The Flash Ezra Miller Date — 10. Ezra Miller — The Flash (2023)

*The Flash* contained two Batmen, collapsing universes, expensive cameos, and one leading actor whom Warner Bros. could barely place on a promotional stage. Ezra Miller’s highly publicized legal and personal controversies dominated the buildup, limiting the traditional press campaign and making the star inseparable from the film’s troubled reputation. Once the superhero epic underperformed, Miller received a substantial portion of the blame. Director Andy Muschietti later acknowledged the publicity crisis, while also citing broader problems such as limited audience appeal—alongside superhero fatigue, poor visual effects, middling reviews, and a DC universe everyone knew was being replaced. | © Warner Bros. Chris Hemsworth Blackhat — 9. Chris Hemsworth — Blackhat (2015)

Michael Mann’s cerebral cyber-thriller asked audiences to accept Chris Hemsworth as an imprisoned computer genius, apparently because hackers also spend six mornings a week lifting enchanted hammers. Critics repeatedly called the actor miscast, arguing that his movie-star presence never disappeared convincingly into the cautious, technical world of the story. *Blackhat* earned less than $20 million worldwide against a reported $70 million budget, turning Hemsworth into the most recognizable symbol of its collapse. Even he later admitted that his performance felt flat, a remarkably honest assessment from a man who could have simply blamed the keyboard. | © Universal Pictures

Brie Larson The Marvels 2023 1 — 8. Brie Larson — The Marvels (2023)

When *The Marvels* recorded the weakest opening in Marvel Cinematic Universe history, Brie Larson once again became the preferred explanation for problems much larger than one performer. Commentators revived years of online hostility toward her, arguing that audiences had rejected Captain Marvel, even though the character’s first solo movie had earned more than $1 billion. The sequel arrived amid superhero fatigue, an actors’ strike that restricted promotion, confusion about its Disney+ connections, and declining enthusiasm for Marvel’s increasingly complicated universe. Larson was the most recognizable name on the poster, which made her an easy target, but blaming her alone required pretending the MCU had been running perfectly until she walked into the room. | © Marvel Studios

Abduction Taylor Lautner — 7. Taylor Lautner — Abduction (2011)

*Abduction* was designed to answer one extremely expensive question: could Taylor Lautner become an action star without a werewolf transformation nearby? The answer from critics was brutal. Lautner’s limited emotional range and youthful presence received much of the blame when the thriller failed to launch the franchise Lionsgate reportedly envisioned, despite his enormous popularity with *Twilight* fans. The movie itself hardly offered elite material, surrounding him with predictable conspiracies, awkward romance, and action sequences that felt borrowed from better films. Still, because the entire production had been built as a showcase for Lautner, its disappointment landed directly on his shoulders—and his leading-man momentum never fully recovered. | © Lionsgate

George Clooney Batman Robin — 6. George Clooney — Batman & Robin (1997)

George Clooney has apologized for *Batman & Robin* so often that contrition practically became part of his press-tour contract. His detached performance as Bruce Wayne certainly did not rescue the movie, and he has repeatedly joked that the cast and filmmakers may have killed the franchise. Audiences, however, were also dealing with neon street gangs, endless ice puns, anatomically ambitious costumes, and a production designed with toy shelves firmly in mind. Clooney accepted the public blame with admirable humor, but director Joel Schumacher and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also acknowledged their mistakes. This disaster required teamwork, even if Batman usually works alone. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Sydney Sweeney Christy — 5. Sydney Sweeney — Christy (2025)

Sydney Sweeney transformed herself to portray boxer Christy Martin, only to watch the film absorb a theatrical knockout almost immediately. *Christy* opened to approximately $1.3 million and then suffered a record-setting second-weekend collapse after losing more than a thousand screens. Social media users rapidly labeled Sweeney a failed movie star, while Ruby Rose went further and personally accused her of ruining the project. The pile-on ignored the difficult subject matter, limited commercial appeal, mixed reviews, and release strategy. Sweeney defended the film as work created for social impact, and the real Christy Martin publicly stood behind her. | © Black Bear Pictures

4. Rachel Zegler — Snow White (2025)

*Snow White* collected enough controversies before release to stock an entire poisoned-apple warehouse. Rachel Zegler faced anger over her casting, her criticism of the original film’s romance, her political posts, and virtually every decision made by a production employing hundreds of other people. After the expensive remake opened to a disappointing $43 million domestically, some commentators—and even producer Marc Platt’s son—placed direct responsibility on her public statements. Box-office analysts instead emphasized weak reviews, divisive visual effects, remake fatigue, marketing difficulties, and limited interest among younger audiences. Zegler became the headline because blaming a corporation is rarely as clickable. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Hayden Christensen Star Wars — 3. Hayden Christensen — Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones (2002)

One complaint about sand became a career-long prison sentence for Hayden Christensen. His stiff romantic exchanges with Natalie Portman turned Anakin Skywalker into the most mocked element of *Attack of the Clones*, and critics frequently treated the performance as proof that the young actor could not carry Darth Vader’s origin story. Christensen absorbed years of hostility despite working with notoriously formal dialogue and a highly controlled directorial style that left little room for natural conversation. The prequel revival has produced a warmer reassessment, but he spent two decades carrying blame for flaws that extended well beyond his delivery. | © Lucasfilm

Tom Cruise The Mummy — 2. Tom Cruise — The Mummy (2017)

Universal unveiled its Dark Universe logo before proving that an actual universe existed, which now feels like opening a theme park with only the gift shop completed. Tom Cruise was not merely the star of *The Mummy*; reports claimed his contract granted him extensive influence over the script, editing, production, and marketing. When the movie disappointed domestically and immediately derailed Universal’s interconnected-monster plans, insiders pointed directly at that creative control. Cruise may not deserve every ounce of blame—the confused screenplay and franchise-first strategy were studio decisions—but he possessed far more authority than the average leading man, making this failure unusually difficult to separate from its star. | © Universal Pictures

1. Scarlett Johansson — Ghost in the Shell (2017)

*Ghost in the Shell* lost control of its narrative the moment Scarlett Johansson was cast as the lead in an adaptation of a landmark Japanese property. Accusations of whitewashing dominated the release, making Johansson—who was also a producer—the public face of both its cultural controversy and disappointing box office. The backlash was understandable, but the film’s problems did not end with casting: its screenplay simplified the source material’s philosophical ideas into a conventional identity mystery while preserving the imagery without much of the meaning. Johansson took the blame for a movie that looked expensive, familiar, and curiously hollow beneath its polished shell. | © Paramount Pictures

1-15

Having your face on the poster gets considerably less glamorous when the box office numbers come in. Suddenly, a film’s tangled script, ballooning budget, and baffling marketing campaign can become a referendum on its leading actor. These 15 actors took the heat for movie flops, sometimes over performances worth criticizing and sometimes for decisions made well above their pay grade. A bad review is one thing; becoming Hollywood’s explanation for a multimillion-dollar mistake is quite another.
