15 Hollywood Stars Who Fell From Grace and Never Recovered

1-15

From the top to gone.

Chris D Elia

15. Chris D'Elia

Getting replaced after filming an entire movie is a fairly decisive message from Hollywood. Chris D’Elia lost his Army of the Dead role to Tig Notaro after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced, including claims involving minors. He denied knowingly pursuing underage women, but his agency dropped him and Netflix scrapped a planned show. His continuing stand-up career proves he still has an audience; the studio opportunities are another story. | © Netflix

Isaiah Washington

14. Isaiah Washington

Dr. Preston Burke could handle a surgical crisis; the publicity crisis surrounding Isaiah Washington proved considerably harder to contain. ABC dropped him from Grey’s Anatomy after controversy over his use of a homophobic slur, which he repeated while addressing reporters at the Golden Globes. He later returned for Cristina’s farewell storyline and landed substantial work on The 100. His career continued, although the prestige of that original breakthrough proved harder to recover. | © ABC

T J Miller

13. T.J. Miller

For a while, T.J. Miller seemed to have Hollywood’s obnoxious comic sidekick market cornered. Then came his messy Silicon Valley departure, sexual assault allegations he denied, and an arrest over an alleged false bomb threat. That federal charge was dismissed after prosecutors considered neurological effects from earlier brain surgery. The distinction matters, even if resolving that case didn’t restore the career momentum he once enjoyed alongside Deadpool and HBO’s startup crowd. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Ezra Miller

12. Ezra Miller

Warner Bros. still released The Flash, but its expensive superhero showcase arrived under the shadow of Ezra Miller’s arrests and troubling allegations. Miller pleaded guilty to misdemeanor unlawful trespass in Vermont and publicly said they were seeking mental health treatment. They later discussed developing another film with We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay. A possible creative reunion, however, is a considerable distance from anchoring multiple studio franchises. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

James Franco

11. James Franco

James Franco once bounced between blockbuster franchises, awards contenders, and Seth Rogen comedies with apparently unlimited room to experiment. His acting school became the focus of a lawsuit alleging sexual exploitation, settled for more than $2.2 million without an admission of liability. Franco separately acknowledged sleeping with students and said it was wrong. Films such as Hey Joe brought him back to acting, but his old position as Hollywood’s omnipresent multitasker remains elusive. | © Netflix

Jussie Smollett

10. Jussie Smollett

The crucial detail in Jussie Smollett’s story is that his conviction was overturned. Illinois’ Supreme Court ruled that prosecuting him after an earlier agreement violated his rights; it did not decide whether his reported hate attack happened. Smollett has maintained his innocence, but the controversy cost him his place on Empire. That legal victory therefore came without the professional reset that might once have seemed possible for the musical drama’s breakout star. | © Netflix

Roseanne Barr

9. Roseanne Barr

Roseanne Barr had already pulled off the comeback most television stars dream about: a revival that attracted an enormous audience. She then lost it after posting a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, prompting ABC to cancel Roseanne. The network salvaged the fictional family as The Conners and killed off its former leading character. Watching your own sitcom household carry on without you is an unusually literal version of being written out of Hollywood. | © ABC

Danny Masterson

8. Danny Masterson

For audiences who knew Danny Masterson as Hyde on That ’70s Show, the familiarity of a sitcom rerun now carries a grim association. Netflix fired him from The Ranch amid rape allegations in 2017. Following a retrial, he was convicted of raping two women and sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in 2023. Those convictions fundamentally changed the legacy of an actor whose appeal had rested on an easygoing television persona. | © Netflix

Steven Seagal in Under Siege cropped processed by imagy

7. Steven Seagal

The journey from Under Siege to enthusiastic Vladimir Putin supporter was certainly an unexpected career development. Steven Seagal’s retreat into low-budget action films was already underway long before his Russian citizenship made headlines. Multiple sexual misconduct allegations, which he denied, further damaged his reputation. Blaming the entire decline on one scandal misses the longer slide: the theatrical action-star career had faded, and his increasingly prominent political allegiances supplied publicity rather than a convincing screen revival. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Cuba Gooding Jr

6. Cuba Gooding Jr.

An Oscar didn’t protect Cuba Gooding Jr. from uneven career choices, but The People v. O.J. Simpson showed he could still command serious attention. His later misconduct case complicated that recovery. He pleaded guilty to forcible touching, then fulfilled an agreement allowing him to replace that plea with a noncriminal harassment violation. The outcome spared him a criminal record, while leaving a considerable gap between his continuing acting work and his former Hollywood standing. | © Columbia Pictures

Armie Hammer

5. Armie Hammer

Call Me by Your Name positioned Armie Hammer for a more interesting career than simply playing the handsome rich guy. Allegations of sexual abuse subsequently derailed that ascent; Hammer denied nonconsensual sexual activity, and prosecutors declined to file charges, citing insufficient evidence. He has since returned to filmmaking with Frontier Crucible. That return deserves acknowledgment, although appearing in a new Western hardly recreates the awards-season attention and studio backing he previously commanded. | © Sony Pictures Classics

Cropped Shia La Beouf

4. Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf’s acclaimed work in Honey Boy and The Peanut Butter Falcon had suggested a rewarding second act beyond Transformers. FKA twigs’ lawsuit alleging sexual battery and abuse then brought a much more serious reckoning than his earlier public controversies. LaBeouf denied the lawsuit’s allegations, and the case settled privately in 2025. Subsequent work, including Megalopolis, means he never disappeared entirely, but that promising stretch of artistic rehabilitation became much harder to sustain. | © Paramount Pictures

Jonathan Majors

3. Jonathan Majors

Marvel had positioned Jonathan Majors’ Kang as a villain capable of sustaining years of interconnected storytelling. That investment ended when the studio dropped him following his conviction for misdemeanor assault and a harassment violation involving his former girlfriend. Magazine Dreams eventually reached theaters through another distributor, and further acting opportunities followed. Still, the distance between rebuilding a career and being entrusted with the next phase of the Marvel machine is enormous. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Kevin Spacey

2. Kevin Spacey

Christopher Plummer replacing Kevin Spacey in an already completed All the Money in the World remains an extraordinary illustration of how quickly a studio can change course. Spacey also lost House of Cards amid sexual misconduct allegations. He subsequently won the Anthony Rapp civil case and was acquitted in his British criminal trial. Smaller projects have offered routes back to acting, but those courtroom victories haven’t restored his former position as a prestige-film fixture. | © Netflix

Bill Cosby

1. Bill Cosby

The fatherly authority Bill Cosby cultivated on television made the allegations against him especially devastating to his public image. His sexual assault conviction was overturned in 2021 because of a prior non-prosecution agreement, but that ruling didn’t end his legal troubles. A California civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting Donna Motsinger in 2026. The comforting persona that once anchored his entertainment empire now sits uneasily beside the accounts of women who accused him. | © ABC
