Dating sims are supposed to help players find romance, but some developers apparently took “anyone can be your soulmate” as a challenge. Here, courtship extends to pigeons, household appliances, cosmic horrors, fast-food mascots and one horse with the disturbingly handsome face of a grown man. Some of these games are clever genre parodies; others pursue their impossible love stories with alarming sincerity. Either way, they prove that virtual romance has no standards, no boundaries and absolutely no fear of getting weird.
